Fuckin' Jocks: Horrific football hazing case shakes NM town
LAS VEGAS, N.M. - It was shocking enough when six high school football players were accused of sodomizing six younger teammates with a broomstick during training camp. But the scandal was raised to a whole new level when the coaches were accused of turning a blind eye to the hazing.

Since then, Robertson High's head football coach and all five assistants have resigned, and prosecutors are considering charges against adults and youngsters alike.

The incident has turned student against student in the town of 14,000, and subjected some of the school's athletes to lewd taunts from spectators.

"I'm very sad, so very sad for these young men," said Veronica Sanchez, a retiree who knows one of the victims and one of the accused. Her friends and family, she said, are split "kind of 50-50" on whether to blame the coaching staff or the older players.

The scandal unfolded at a four-day, mid-August preseason training camp in the mountains west of Las Vegas, a predominantly Hispanic, once-booming Old West town 60 miles from Santa Fe, now known for its stately Victorian homes.

According to state police reports, a group of juniors assaulted several younger teammates over two days, holding the victims down while a broomstick was forced into their rectums over their athletic shorts.

Its mechanisms, its workings, its geography are all fascinating to the right wing (or nascent right wing) mind.

25. The eternal fraternal mindfuck: Hazing is not abuse, it's tradition.

If you accept that, you're in, and the perks/scooby snacks you get just cement the mindfuck.

2. When will it end?
Who teaches these boys that they can do this and get away with it? I know teenage boys are all ten feet tall and bulletproof, but this kind of stuff goes far beyond the usual testosterone rush of adolescence.

It's hard enough being a kid today. This kind of stuff, oh, man, it's so awful, I just wonder who taught these kids what it meant to be a good person.

No one, apparently.

Jesus. It just keeps happening.............

7. Because they refuse to call a spade a spade
From the article:

"This was a very violent, very serious form of bullying," the superintendent said. "Until we do a better job of identifying and dealing with it, this is not going to be the last time we hear about it."

Its not F**king bullying - it is ASSAULT! Call it what it is.

13. No, it's assault and battery.
Maybe assault/battery with a deadly weapon -- wasn't there a black guy in New York a few years back, cops sodomized him to death with a broomstick? A good DA might be able to make a case for assault/battery with a deadly, if that precedent was cited.

But otherwise you remember correctly.

24. Glad to hear he lived.
But wo months in the hospital -- I'd say that still counts as "assault/batter with a deadly weapon"

15. I'd guess the boys who were assaulted aren't feeling exactly 10' tall
or bulletproof.

This is something they will deal with for the rest of their lives. The ONLY mitigating factor is that each knows he is not the only one it happened to.

21. be certain that it happened to the older ones, too
That's the MO of institutionalized hazing - "I got mine, these new guys are gonna get theirs, too."

How do you prosecute the generation that happens to get caught at it, when it happened to them a year or two ago?

30. That's right
What's been stolen from those poor boys is beyond words. The boys who assaulted them - and their families - should be made to pay and pay and pay.

Shades of the Roman Catholic Church, only worse. These were their TEAMMATES!!!!

Edited on Tue Sep-23-08 01:50 PM by timeforarevolution
things ALWAYS having been fucked up in this manner and we are more aware now due to expanded news coverage, availability, etc.?

I'm 45 and I DON'T EVER recall hearing about this type of hazing, and I went to a football-obsessed school.

The sodomizing of males under the guise of "hazing" (Abu Ghraib, anyone?) seems unique to the last decade or two.

What is going on? Is this another result of the hypocritical Moral Majority crowd and their offspring?

I realize these are violent acts and not sexual acts per se, but these acts really blur the two, making it seem like those who perform such acts of violence are EXTRAORDINARILY sexually repressed and/or repulsed with themselves in some way.

9. Hmmm. Last decade or two?
That's be '88, about the time Rush became the de facto national ward captain for the Republicans, in the wake of Poppy Bush's defeat.

Co-inky-dink? :tinfoilhat:

10. So many Bushies are repressed homosexuals turned homophobes.
Anyone who doesn't notice this is blind or willfully ignorant.

I mean, the football dudes...the MANLY MEN and the way they figure out to haze someone is to sodmize them?

Ahem. 880-lb. elephant in the room, please. There's a lot of latent homsexuality out there, and apparently most of it is in the evangelical churches and Republicn Campiagns. Both places which have one thing in common. They are places where people preach their unsullied heterosexuality VERY LOUDLY.

Perhaps a bit too loudly, eh?

Who but a latent homosexual could come up with sdomoizig boys with broosticks and not be repelled at the very thought. Some part of them must have LIKED doing it. No doubt. They were hurting and sodomizing the little homosexual inside THEMSELVES.

Unfortunately, they never kill that. The problem is, insted they'll kill innocent homsoexuals.

It's a fucked-up world.

20. This has as much to do with latent homosexuality as rape does with sex.
First, gays aren't the only group who enjoy/practice/put up with anal sex. Second, some gays aren't into anal sex/play. Finally, this is about humiliation and domination, much the same way that rape is not about heterosexuality (in most cases).

It isn't about latent homosexuality, but about blatant homophobia.

there is enough blame to go around for everybody.

Yeah, boy, team sports really teach you something about life, all right.

God, what a jungle it is for kids these days. Well, it always has been, but the degree and frequency of this kind of thing just seems to have been ratcheted up even from the bad things I heard and read about when I was a kid.
