Russia to Develop Air Defense Systems All Over Post-Soviet Area

A single regional air defense system which is due to be set up between Russia and Belarus in the near future will serve an example for developing similar systems all over the post-soviet area, Commander in Chief of the Military Air Forces of the Russian Federation General of the Army Vladimir Mikhailov declared.

Russia to develop new air defence system

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's air force chief said on Tuesday Moscow was working on a new generation air defence system after the United States announced plans to deploy a missile shield in Eastern Europe.

Gen. Vladimir Mikhailov said the new technology would go further than the existing S-400 (Triumph) anti-aircraft missile system, which has a range of 400 km (250 miles).

"We are moving to the creation of a new system of anti-aircraft defence which will significantly surpass the capabilities of the S-400," Mikhailov told a meeting of foreign military attaches in Moscow.

"This is not an offensive but rather a defensive weapon," he said.

2. Why would Russia put defense missles in Cuba?

I don't think Russia is helping Cuba's defense anymore, Cuba is more likely to rely on Venezuela. And if the claim is that the missles are to defend Russia from US attack (only country in west with capability), they are too far away from the probable track of US missles over the arctic. IMO, the chances are remote of Russia putting missles in Cuba.

over Belarus. NATO has had Belarus in it's sights for a while now. I don't think Russia would allow any attack on them.

So I would imagine Russia would want their missile shield on our border to protect themselves from Iran too.

Actually, if Iran did have long range missles, the great circle track would pass near or over eastern Europe. However, Iran is a long time from acquiring ICBMs, probably much longer than the 10 years to get a nuclear warhead. Of course, maybe Iran's developing DRONES! <rolleyes>

and Iran would bomb Eastern Europe why???? Oh that's right, they wouldn't..Bush just wants to give more money to the Military/Industrial Complex and expand our empire. Obliterating the old socialist system of the Soviet Union was only the first step..the real goal is to totally control Russia..turn it into a colony that can NEVER AGAIN go on an independant path that threatens the powers that be. There are lots of resources and cheap labor the West would love to gobble up in Russia. The fall of the USSR is the WORST thing that has happened to Russia since Stalin.
