US Senate to reopen Iraq debate Wednesday

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Senate will reopen debate Wednesday on a Democratic push to restrict the Iraq war effort after weeks of procedural delays by Republican allies of the White House, Senate leaders said.


Senator Mitch McConnell (news, bio, voting record), head of the Republican minority and a close White House ally, announced Tuesday that his party does not plan to block the opening of a debate on a Democratic bill on pulling US troops out of Iraq by March 31, 2008.

Since February, Republicans have managed to prevent Democrats in the Senate from passing a resolution criticizing President George W. Bush's war policy, and have blocked debate on a proposal to set a pullout timetable.
