Are we going the way of Argentina?

Argentina, pre-Peron, was an economic powerhouse.

Pre-WWII they were more powerful than we were.

Then lots of things happened - and they are where they are now.

The path that Argentina went on: unilateralism, fascism, and ultimately autocratic military rule looks a lot like where we're headed.

1. I think we are - without a question of McCain gets elected.

I'm thinking that if Obama gets the nod, he may be able to put the brakes on it. Please, God.

2. I hope not

If we can win this, and all news points to yes (at the moment) - this will be a hotbed, socially - but economically, we will start to turn in the right direction.

Thing is - we Progressives have to embrace Globalism. It is what is.

At the same time, we need to work protections into our trade deals - so they're not so one-sided.

NAFTA needs to be re-negotiated.

All trade policies have to be re-negotiated.

Instead of profit, we have to push for protection.

This is government's job.

Without it, we will be a backwater Banana Republic, just like Argentina is today.

7. The steps you cite in your post make me feel better.

So, good. I know it won't be overnight, and we may have to readjust some of our thinking and ways of living, but at least we won't be going off the cliff.

And you're right - we have to embrace Globalism. It's the reality of today.

If we can find a sustainable, safe, clean, and cheap power source (there are many) to move anything anywhere - to the point that anything can be found anywhere...

This is the goal

And if we can truly have the "Workers of the World Unite!" then everything is balanced.

It'll take lots more - decades - to even get to the levels of economic and social justice we had in the late 70s. There's no question that, since then, we've lurched CONTINUOUSLY to the fascist right, sometimes more slowly than others.

House, god forbid? She sure has the trappings. I used to listen to Evita on the short wave radio when I lived in Chile back then. She was a rousing speech maker, a young attractive woman who dressed well and didn't mind showing off her Parisian designed clothes, furs and jewelry because she said the poor people who supported her wanted her to look good. She did do a lot of good for the dirt poor of Argentina by blackmailing the rich to get money to support her charitable projects and feather her and Juan's Swiss bank account nest as well. She couldn't play the mother card of course because she never had children. But she did manage to become Vice President before she died.

The "Chicago Boys" fucked up Chile AND Argentina.

And they were brought in for the US under Bush. McCain will continue their use, because the end result is "Toxic Sludge is GOOD for you!" in their disinformation campaign.
