When the DJIA falls bellow 10,578.24
Edited on Thu Sep-18-08 11:52 AM by louis c
It will be in the negative range since President Bush took office in 2001. That is significant. That means that if you put your money in a mattress rather than in the Dow 30, you'd be ahead. By comparison, if you invested in the Dow when Bill Clinton took office in 1993, and sold on that day in 2001, your portfolio would have increased 340%. So much for Republican economics.

I am writing this post from the Wndham Hotel in Andover, Mass., at the state AFL-CIO convention. My birthday is today (56 yrs.), and I will spend it exactly the way I would want to, knocking on union doors in the swing state of New Hampshire to attempt to convince our union brothers to vote Obama. I believe the most significant demographic in this election is white middle class voters, and we have to do everything we can to put them in our column. This is where we belong.

4. But Obama can't connect with hard working whites...
I heard it on CNN quite a few times lately. Its because they don't "know" him yet.

Strange he is having problems with this. I just can't put my finger on what would originate such a story.

7. I don't want to argue over NAFTA
I was a Gephardt guy.

Clinton was a poor Democratic alternative. but in this system, you can only take what you can, the lesser of two, you know wat's.

To me, in the last 56 years, (my entire life), the Democratic candidate for President is always better the the Republican.

keep the facts simple and don't get sucked into tan gentle issues.

23. Tan gentle?
Sounds like a nicer version of tangental. FWIW I do that too, even more now that I am in my 50s.

Or is "tan gentle" an in joke that I am missing? :hi:

I voted for Perot, twice, for this very reason.

But I don't want to fight yesterday's war. we're into a new battle. today. I'm sure Barack didn't agree with NAFTA and GATT at the time either. But it would be ridiculous, politically, to criticize bill Clinton with 48 days to go until a sea change election.

We have to use what comparisons are necessary to convince the swing voters. We can deal with the professorial comments in 2009, after we win.

17. It took 10 years and many a PhD to start to figure out the '29 crash
it will take that long now

The battle right now is... NO AUSTERITY PLAN

Rubin is a chicago boy... and he is one of the advisors to Obama

Yes, I am getting technical here... but an IMF styled Austerity plan will make things far worst

We need to pressure the campaign to dust off John Maynard Keynes

22. Clue: Abusing the labor force is one way the DOW is increased.
Edited on Thu Sep-18-08 06:51 PM by TahitiNut
Casual overtime, elimination of benefits ... lots of ways to (temporarily) 'boost' productivity. It's an old approach ... lots plantation owners beat their slaves and cut their rations. The Pharaohs might have perfected the approach ... and created a whole new religion because of it.

A rising stock market doesn't necessarily mean labor is benefiting. It sure hasn't in the last 20-30 years.

Seems to have pretty much held true until Dubya, when we got both war and a depression.

27. It finished at 11,019.69.
So, that's 459.45 points, or 4.34%, over 7 years, 8 months.

The Dow was at 10,808.52 on Sept 18, 2000, up from 3242 when Clinton took office, or 333.39%.

So far, the score is

Democratic economics: 333.39%%, minus inflation.
Publican economics: 4.34%, minus inflation.

So far, we're ahead by a bit. ;P

It's not. It's worth way less.
