FEMA Voucher Text Message Is Hoax

HOUSTON -- Dozens of people lined up at the George R. Brown Convention Center Thursday after a text message and radio stations said they could get a $500 voucher from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, but it was just a rumor, KPRC Local 2 reported.

"Someone sent it," said one woman in line. "I don't know who it was."

The message said that people should arrive at the convention center at 5 a.m.

"A few radio stations were giving out factually incorrect information, saying that FEMA vouchers would be available here at the George R. Brown, which is absolutely incorrect," convention center spokeswoman Sharon Adams said.

The convention center is being used as a temporary transit hub for the American Red Cross.
