Support for Obama in Iowa has Jumped into the Double Digits
Obama up by 12 in Register’s Iowa Poll

9/14/08 12:23 PM

Barack Obama leads John McCain 52 percent to 40 percent in Iowa, according to a Des Moines Register Iowa Poll released Sunday.

The poll, conducted Sept. 8 through 10 after both parties’ conventions, also included Libertarian Bob Barr, at 2 percent, and Ralph Nader at 1 percent, and has a 4 percent margin of error.

In the U.S. Senate race, incumbent Tom Harkin leads Republican challenger Christopher Reed, 53 percent to 34 percent.

Other key findings in the Register article:

* Independents prefer Obama to McCain, 49 percent to 36 percent.
* Voters under 35 prefer Obama by two to one.
* Obama leads among women, 53 percent to 39 percent for McCain.
* Republicans are more satisfied with McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin, than Democrats are with Joe Biden, Obama’s vice presidential pick.
* President Bush’s approval rating with Iowans is at an abysmal 25 percent, with 71 percent disapproving.
* Senator Chuck Grassley remains popular with Iowans, at 69

I think these results are encouraging, especially the results among Independents and women which are at odds with national polls.

3. Good result but need cross tabs to see if Dems/Dem Leaners were oversampled
This is always the key and can be overly subjective from poll to poll. For example one poll in MN shows a tie while a CNN poll in the same state shows Obama +14. The question always is: who did they sample and what was the party ID breakdown.

(I do believe Obama takes Iowa but more like 6% than this result)

but I think the Register poll is the best for Iowa

here:

"As the following table shows, the Des Moines Register "Iowa Poll" conducted by Selzer and Company easily earns the highest marks, with virtually all rating it either very (36%) or somewhat (50%) reliable. The other pollsters with the highest scores are nationally known media surveys: ABC/Washington Post, the Pew Research Center and CBS/New York Times."

6. Remember to ask that question any time you hear about McSame in a poll
The National polls are over sampling Greedy Oil Party members to make it appear close enough to steal again.

7. As a proud Iowan...
Edited on Sun Sep-14-08 01:12 PM by TwoSparkles
I'd like to just gloat for a minute and brag about our people.

Iowans are very educated, and very smart. Many people here
are just good, decent people who aren't easily victimized
by the lies of politicians. Our state is 98 percent white, but
bigotry and racism aren't as prevalent as in some other areas.
Obviously, there are amazing people in every state, but I'm pretty proud
of my state--for going with Obama in the Iowa caucuses, and also for the
current Iowa poll that heavily favors Obama.

There are ignorant people in Iowa, as there are ignorant
people in every state. However, I do think that there
is a large contingent of Iowans who just get it.

Unfortunately, there are many ignorant people in this
country, and it is those people who are buying the McPalin
lies.

I think Iowans for Obama should put a great deal of their
efforts in helping Obama in Michigan and Ohio. We need to
put our Progressive talent in other states, since we seem to
have things covered here.

Sorry, if this sounds snobby--but I'm really proud to live
here and I'm proud of the Progressive leadership our state
has demonstrated in the past months.

8. Perhaps Iowa's primary position makes them more savvy about politics.
Over the years I have to believe they've paid attention to the promisesand the actual results.

9. You've got a lot to gloat about.
To me, your education system is what really sets you apart. Consistently in or near the top ten in smartest states:

http://www.morganquitno.com/edrank.htm

1) Vermont
2) Massachusetts
3) Connecticut
4) New Jersey (?!?)
5) Maine
6) Virginia
7) Montana
8) Wisconsin
9) Iowa
10)Pennsylvania

Except for Virgina, all of the states are either blue or swing states. Actually, I don't know about Montana, they've got a Dem gov at least.
