And Americans wonder why the rest of the world is laughing at us

This guy sought to intimidate Hurricane Ike with his flag

It is a good photo

And it says so much at the same time

4. Alternatively,
You could see it as the strength of the American will to rebuild and recover from tragedy. I hate making fun of such a pretty picture.

6. This was before Ike struck
To show that would be a pic of Habitat For Humanity rebuilding afterwards

This just merely shows American false Bravado

7. I think that was taken before the storm actually hit.
I remember seeing that Friday afternoon. So it may be that he's thinking 'what should I take, insurance papers, pets, old photos, no my flag!'

8. and people in other countries don't have a "will to rebuild and recover from
tragedy"?? WTF? Americans are somehow superior in this regard? Stronger, tougher, more moral?

12. Just trying to be positive.
Saying Americans can "rebuild and recover" doesn't automatically mean other countries can't. You're inferring something I never implied.

9. Pre-hurricane or post hurricane.
Context is everything.

Pre-hurricane means that this moran is standing up to a natural force that he doesn't like. He is giving a weather system humanized characteristics (beyond the name "Ike"). He is trying to bargain with it or "stand up to" it. Which is complete nonsense, one does not bargain with a force of nature.

Post hurricane he is making a statement about our willingness to come back from a natural disaster as part of the American Spirit.

Big difference.

14. Pre-Hurricane
This was from a Pre-Ike Photo Series that ran in Houston's Paper

That same photo series had the abandoned dogs in the back yard, up to their bellies in water

21. Then this is just another moran... like the ones that were praying Ike away...
and people left their dogs in places where they couldn't escape?

That's just cruel... at least tag them and then let them run free.

10. How do we know what the picture is about?
Could he have just been taking the flag down for safe-keeping before the storm got there?

16. Pre Hurricane, yes
Edited on Sun Sep-14-08 01:21 PM by Taverner
That pic was taken in the afternoon before Ike hit

And it looks like he had fashioned his own flag pole out of some stick, and was walking up and down the seawall waving it.

Because those colors don't run...

Moral of the story: Just because you and I are too intelligent to do something that dumb, doesn't mean others won't.

22. It appears that you may be right, and I was quite wrong:
"Robert Shumake brought along a flag for his stroll along Galveston's seawall Friday."

18. Just FYI
that statue in the background is part of the tribute to those who died & those who survived the 1900 Hurricane. Or is that stupid too?

23. Um - those have nothing to do with each other
Just answer me this question:

A Cat 4 Hurricane is coming. What do you do?

(a) Pack up everything, including pets, and head to drier land?
(b) Stick around, but board up all your windows and wear a lifejacket indoors just in case?
(c) Grab your flag and start waving it about. Hurricanes hate America.

24. Um, well, it wasn't a Cat 4 for starters
Most hurricane vets won't move unless it's a Cat 3. (but that is probably going to change in the future. I personally wouldn't do what this guy did. Maybe he was all stocked up & ready to head out, just wanted to see Galveston before the storm? Who knows?

But since you are so smart & know everything, why don't you come down to Hurricane Alley & tell us dummies how to do things?

If you think that's fun - knock yourself out
