2. Just heard that too.
And they are powerless to do anything about it. So sad.

4. So the water couldn't do one good thing and put the fire out?
Useless stupid hurricane.

11. Nah.
Wasn't raining when that picture was taken.

The houses there are mostly up on stilts--the bottom story is storage and staircase, maybe garage. Has its downside, I guess.

Nice houses, by and large. W Galveston a ways, towards the state park.

5. That's just the way Galveston (or at least parts of it),
are built.

6. In the long run, that's probably better for a lot of people.
Unless you have flood coverage, plain old homeowners insurance won't cover storm surge damage, but it will cover fire as well as wind.

If your house burnt down, you don't have to go to court and have battling experts over whether the wind or the water destroyed your home.

7. Insurance will claim that it is flood damage.
Water cause the electrical mains to short out sparking the fire..

I betcha...

13. Thanks, Breeze
I've been a member for a couple years, but mostly just check in rather than contribute. Right now I'm working on school-related stuff, but I'm enjoying the community of DU and streaming video of the hurricane coverage, as my entire family is in Houston. Have fun w/ ABC - I can't stomach that stuff right now :)

14. Never seen beach houses like that
Edited on Fri Sep-12-08 09:11 PM by Wiley50
Stacked up in rows perpendicular to the beach

In FL you're either beachfront or you are the next street over

And, yes, there are gonna be arson investigators working these fires
