Women = Cheerful breeders for the War Machine
Just read this response in a CNN forum, to a story about former Senator Chafee of RI calling Palin a "cocky wacko." Are there really people in this country that think like this???

"McCain is the only one with enough guts to take out our enemies in North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia.

With the no abortion policy and a draft, we will have enough solders to continue God's war for our country."

So....we womenfolk are supposed to be cheerful little breeders to provide cannon fodder for their goddam war machine???? Evil. They're just plain evil.

1. And if you aren't keeping up your end of the quota, I suppose a little rape would be called for to
assist you in the National Goal, the New Army.

Offspring of rapists "nurtured" by raped mothers should make good killers, eh?

4. Haven't tried to read that yet, fearing it may be too close to impending reality.
I hear tell it's very well-written.
Would be easier to approach if it were written badly, I guess.

9. It's Excellent -- and chilling
Margaret Atwood is one of my favorite writers, and that is one of her best books. The premise: a future world that is a theocracy, where the "good and moral" women who are unable to have children utilize a lower class of women who can bear children. Their husbands breed with these "handmaids" (and it's truly creepy and ritualized, with the wife involved in the breeding act) and then the handmaid turns over the child to the "good" wife. Women who rebel or who are seen as unfit or traitors to this process (who seek to abort, for example) are publicly executed, in grisly hangings in huge stadiums (shades of the Taliban, eh?)

There are waaaay too many things in it that remind me of the past few years in the U.S. I know the plot sounds outlandish, but as you said, it's so well written that you are completely drawn in.

10. I'll put it on my list, but won't read it until after the election -- obviously "Handmaid's Tale"
would do nothing to allay the anxieties I am currently suffering from! I splurged and bought a sale copy of Ron Suskind's most recent (The Way of the World) and that's up next. Should probably read something NON political and let heart rate get back to normal.

21. Some parents start them in the program at 8 years-old. Kind of sick, eh?
http://www.mclwestchester.org/Programs/YoungMarines.aspx

The Young Marines is open to all boys and girls aged 8 through graduation of High School. The program was founded in 1958 to promote the mental, moral, and physical development of young Americans. The Young Marines offer a variety of activities specifically designed to develop greater self-esteem, discipline, and self-confidence in its members. Character building is one of the most important objectives of the Young Marine program and all of its activities emphasize the importance of honesty, courage, respect, loyalty, dependability, and a sense of devotion to God, country, community, and family.

In July 1993, the United States Marine Corps officially designated the Young Marines program as "the focal organization for fulfilling its participation in the Department of Defense's drug demand reduction activities."

The Vision:

Impact America's future by providing a unique youth leadership program which nurtures and develops citizens in our communities, instilling the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment.

The Mission:

The Young Marines program educates and inspires youth within our communities by promoting a healthy lifestyle through instructional and adventurous activities. We develop responsible citizens using the volunteer resources of a civilian and military partnership. The teamwork and Esprit de Corps enjoyed by Young Marines help each other discover the hero within.

15. You've never heard that? I have...
...it's a lot of what's behind the GOP's penchant to control women by outlawing abortion and birth control.

Yep. It's to breed lots of cannon fodder for wars and lots of other little happy followers of Jayzus don'tchaknow.

In their opinion, that is what womens' purpose in the world IS.
