I quipped this a few hours after leaving my office in a Boston skyscraper (with a view of Logan Airport's runway 4R) on 9-11-01. As I was living two blocks from the East Coast shoreline, the normal noise of passenger airliners overhead had been replaced by the periodic screech of military jets. On 9-18-01 I was within a few hundred or so feet of the WTC staring at the hulk of Building 7 as military transports and utility vehicles rumbled through the otherwise carless downtown.
Some of us knew then how things would probably go down. Trashing of freedoms and liberties. Bombing of innocents. Triumphalism. Paranoia. Knee-jerk, irrational, irresponsible reactions.
It continues to bear repeating. If the goal of terrorists is to destroy freedom, they can only win if they cause governments to roll back freedoms and exhaust national wealth on fruitless endeavors.
