What is this ?
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 09:51 PM by ColbertWatcher
Here is a picture of the new book on the GOP's VP pick, with emphasis on a lapel pin she is wearing.

Here is a link to the original thread that made me wonder what the hell I was looking at.

Does anyone know what that pin is?

Is it just more bait from the GOP-controlled media?

The only thing I could find about a red star, was about secession, but nothing specifically about Alaska secession.

http://sos.georgia.gov/museum/html/flag_1860-1861.htm

http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/us-ga1.html#redstar

http://www.cviog.uga.edu/Projects/gainfo/secessfl.htm

Note: regardless what it might seem to be, there are many companies that will make an enamel lapel pin to your specifications.

(EDITED TO ADD)

Some have suggested it is a Blue Star Service Pin. But, it looks red to me. Is it blue?

If it is a service pin, she's wearing it wrong (it's supposed to be worn vertically)

5. Ha, ha!
Someone on the other thread said it was a service pin. But the star on the service pin was blue, not red.

I dunno.

9. Just google "blue star" and you'll see it
Which brings up the question, "is she wearing it correctly?" The pictures that come up show the rectangle with the shorter edges as the top/bottom.

Here's a link to the wiki entry about Blue Star Banners. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service_flag

13. The pin is worn horizontal while the banner is hung vertical. (Like the flag.)
It does look like a Blue Star Service pin to me. I remember them from (and after) WW2 when I was a toddler ... both my parents' families had them in the window - my mother's family had three stars and my father's family had five stars. (Nobody ever wore one or flew the banner for me when I was in Nam. It wasn't "in" then.)

It's always nicer to know the truth than to sit here wondering. :hi:

My dad was in the Marines and saw action in the Korean Conflict. He enlisted because it was what his family did. His three older brothers fought in World War II and he has often said that his generation of vets had more in common with the Vietnam vets than he did with his brothers or his dad.

17. That's what I was wondering
Her kid has signed up but hasn't shipped off yet. If he hasn't even gone to basic training, it seems like a huge fucking stretch (LIE) to say her son is active duty.

12. But didn't her kid just join?
Did they just print the cover of the book?

Isn't she wearing it wrong?

And it still looks red to me.

21. It was blue. She wore it at the convention.

By wrong do you mean situationally wrong? Or sideways? I don't think there really is a way to physically wear it wrong. If her son is going on a tour sometime this month then he is in so I don't see anything wrong with her wearing it, maybe they are supposed to wait until they are actually on their tour, but I wouldn't fault someone for putting it on or in the window before they left.

28. It's a "Son in Service" pin.
I guess now they might be called "Child in Service" to reflect the GI Janes.
They are unofficial. According to the link you provided they are to be worn horizontally, as she is wearing it, but the truth is they can be worn anyway the owner sees fit.

They are very common and date back at least to WW2.
Many parents (then and now) also have banners they hang in the windows of their homes. I don't recall them being used, at least widely, during Korea or Vietnam.

If her kid buys the farm, she gets to upgrade to a gold star.
