Campaign pointers from Robert Wexler's "Fire Breathing Liberal"
I'm just reading the book now, and here's how he talks about the lessons he learned early on:
-- "If you make a commitment to run a completely positive campaign, you will lose every time. I'm not defending that reality, just acknowledging it. And it was very important that I learned it early in my career."
-- "Never allow your opponent to define you in the minds of voters."

"The bottom line is, If you take an unfair hit, you can't assume voters will be able to differentiate the truth from political fiction. So if you're not punching first, you have to at least be ready to counter-punch quickly."

(Emphasis mine)
