GLBTs who vote right wing / Repug. How, Why?????
First I live in Vancouver Canada so I'm not specifically talking about voting Republican but instead the set of similar values anyone would be voting for when voting for a right wing party in any country. I work downtown in a retail store in a very gay friendly neighbourhood, probably a good %20-30+ of our customers are gay (right down by the beach we are the SF bay of the north ;). Most of those I meet are liberal/left leaning whether gay or straight but of course the percentage is far greater amongst those who are gay. Still I do meet the odd person who is obviously gay and conservative (my manager almost fits though I'd say he isn't as conservative as some). Question is how do these people justify voting right wing / republican?!?! I'm not so stupid as to think that gay = liberal, gay is just another personal trait like skin colour, sex, height etc etc... But when a large percentage of a party has made it known that they hate all people of a given trait not just hate but loath, think they are committing some ultimate sin... how can you look past that?!?

1. Taxes, probably

True or not, lots of folks buy into that whole "Liberals will raise your taxes!" meme, and $$$ makes people look past lots of unsavory things.

Not that that's the only reason, but it seems a likely one.

2. Chickens voting for Col. Sanders
Deluded, self-hating idiots. If they were Jews in 1930s Germany they'd have voted for Hitler. then wondered why they were being marched to the gas chambers and never made the connection.

6. I've been wondering the same thing
my whole life about blacks who are republicans. The only answer I've come with is some kind of self-hatred, as well. Funny, being black, i've never met a black republican. Only see them on television spilling their garbage, where there seemed to be more of them than at the republican convention.

12. Don't you love the fact that CNN (et al) loves to put on black republican counterpoints...
like they are trying to show just how "fair and balanced" they are. Instead all they do is skew public opinion on the real demographics. Sure there are black republicans but when it's like 2% of black voters and like 30% of black political pundits on TV somethings more than a bit fishy.

3. I work with an openly gay man...
and he's voting McCain.

Why? Racism, plain and simple. He wants a white person in office. I'd almost laugh at the irony of his discrimination if it weren't so fcking infuriating.

10. Sarah Palin's church supports the "ex-gay" movement.

How does your openly gay co-worker rationalize that? I'm not singling him out...I genuinely don't understand how gay people can support bigots like that.

4. "We disapprove of our own lifestyle!"

Yeah, seriously, I don't get it. I don't get right wing Pagans, either. I'm like, hello people! If the fundie Repub nutjobs had their way, you'd be stoned to death in the street!

Maybe they think they're an exception or something. Wake up, morans! When they talk about the evilness of a group you happen to belong to, they mean you too, no matter how you vote.

ETA: Really, I don't understand why anyone except rich white men would vote right wing. And even then, I'd only expect it out of rich white men with no conscience, empathy, or sense of fairness.

11. To answer my own question...
I'd have to say it's actually that they buy into most of the narrow minded social package of these people. Being gay doesn't prevent you from being racist, bigoted, and narrow minded about other aspects of life and these voters share this in common with the right wingers they want to vote fore. It just seems odd to me that being discriminated against so trivially doesn't lend them a better perspective on their own trivial discrimination of others.

16. A close friend of mine is a gay man...
and we specifically don't talk politics all that often because of his republican leanings.

I don't at all understand it.

It ISN'T racism... he's white as could be and his partner is a black man!

He actually listens to Rush Limbaugh on the radio!

My husband and I are so perplexed by his political opinions!
