Sarah Palin affair rumours are false, says John McCain's team
Source: Telegraph

Advisers to John McCain have threatened legal action against the American tabloid “National Enquirer” after it claimed that his vice-presidential running mate Sarah Palin had committed adultery with a business associate of her husband.

The smearing of the Palin family must end,” said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt. “The allegations contained on the cover of the National Enquirer insinuating that Gov Palin had an extramarital affair are categorically false. It is a vicious lie.

“The efforts of the media and tabloids to destroy this fine and accomplished public servant are a disgrace. The American people will reject it.”

The Enquirer also alleges that Palin, whose daughter Bristol, 17, is pregnant, unjustly fired a public safety official while she was governor of Alaska. The article was based entirely on unnamed sources and the magazine often pays sources to speak to them.

“Senator McCain and Governor Palin look forward to discussing the issues that Americans care about, fixing broken government, creating jobs, making our country energy independent and securing the peace for the next generation by bringing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to a victorious end,” Mr Schmidt continued.

50. Unfortunately, I bought it because of this story.
There is nothing to it. No witnesses, no names, no nothing. Just a source quoted as a Palin "enemy". Very disappointing.

They got some credibility with Edwards but if this story is going to wash we need proof.

When Lyndon Johnson ran for Congress, legend says, he wanted to spread the rumor that his opponent was a pig-fucker. Johnson's campaign manager said, "Lyndon, you know he doesn't do that!" Johnson replied, "I know. I just want to make him deny it."

There is some dispute as to its veracity, but most think it happened.

I accept it as gospel because it is the perfect allegory and is perfectly believable of Lyndon Johnson.

The Enquirer is getting better at reporting than the mainstream papers. Well, I guess that's to be expected, since the mainstream papers have fired most of their reporters, and mostly rely on no-longer-reliable AP.

36. If it were untrue
then the worst thing to do would be to highlight a typical Enquirer slam headline with an OPEN rebuttal!
No one does that anymore. You either put the legal pressure on them, or the thug pressure, but never public pressure. Most of McCain's "lower class" base passes by that magazine cover every day.

Disciplining the Enquirer has no effect on the already shackled MSM that is beginning to lose its nerve as the GOP mailbox. If it it is all lose/lose it was dumb to deny it that way. Broke the VP selection electrified rail rules, now springs the LBJ trap on himself. Palin continues to eat away the attention- mostly in a defensive negative way(and getting worse).

McCain is unfit and it is a tribute to how castrated his own party is that they have no way of dealing with reality, no competency even in doing harm, finally hurting themselves the way they have been hurting all Americans for far too long.

A source can prove its reliability by repeatedly being right. If one comes to accept that source, it may only be recognition of the reality that it is a thorough and professional source, regardless of one's preferences.

58. The Enquirer isn't "respectable," but nobody can deny
that it is filling a vacuum, becoming journalism or something approaching journalism by default. Thatt's only because the MSM has abdicated its responsibility to inform the public and turned into the public relations arm of the Republican Party. The Enquirer is STILL a gossip rag and will never be anything else, but sometimes the gossip turns out to be true.

48. Rethugs and the Tabloids: Consumed By Their Own Fire
If the tabloids find enough evidence of Sarah Palin's shenanigans to publish the details without fear of losing a lawsuit, Sarah Palin's comeuppance will be in part of her own making. Sarah Palin's behavior was Sarah Palin's behavior, not Mister Bill's or the secret Hillary lesbian ninjas that right wing-nuts like to freak out about.

Most of us who remember that the Rethugs were more than willing to use the tabloids to discredit former president Clinton with whatever they could find or invent, especially if the evidence was lacking. For that matter, the Rethugs are still doing it--the Globe is an especially shameless purveyor of Republican propaganda.

I don't advocate Democratic and progressive news organizations jumping into the wallow and spreading muck themselves, but I don't think they should stand in the way if enough of the tabloids find something interesting about Sarah Palin and start stirring it up. Why interfere with bad karma coming home?
