what it is - the end of a very long road where many, many people (a number of whom are shady or have checkered pasts) go to disappear. Not all Alaskans , of course, fall into this category, but it is a place that has a VERY different feel than the lower 48.

1. I can't see any possible benefit to making such a comparison . . .
Perhaps true that Alaska is where losers and sociopaths go to disappear. But, if anyone associated with progressive politics or -- grid forbid, the Obama campaign -- said so, the 'Licans would beat us with the elitist stick until we were dead. Especially since such an opinion is verrrrry difficult to quantify, i.e., prove.

I'd keep that one for discussions in the living room while watching The Daily Show.

I think it's a fair comment to say the culture up there is a bit different. I like visiting a lot - lots of fun things to see and do.

21. For a period of time from about 1980 until 2000
I never left the state at all. Since I finally got rid of my loser ex-husband and now have a new one, I get Outside at least once a year to San Francisco. (My husband's union, MEBA, flies us down there for a physical every year.) And, let's see, I've been to Texas a couple of times (where my husband and I were first sweethearts back in 1963), Memphis, Seattle -- and Colorado and Oregon (for my daughter's graduation from college and law school). I think that's about it. Oh, and DC for peace marches in September 2005 and January 2007.

It's always a lot different down there -- the number of people is what's hard for me to get used to. I like living in Anchorage because as a city of about 260,000 or so we have all the city conveniences, but we can get out of town and be in the wilderness in no time. No fences, no billboards, no freeways. I really love it here, I wouldn't live anywhere else.

I guess many hippie shacks are abandoned now. I saw a few when I was up there last month. Also saw a place outside Wasilla that was a deadringer for some sort of commune. Know anything about that?

I'm sure there are some communes around here and there, although I don't know of any specifically. The towns of Talkeetna and Homer are pretty much hippie enclaves.

Texas is. I felt like I was in another country when I moved to Louisiana.

I don't think it behooves us to denigrate the citizens of an entire state, some of whom are on our side.

18. What the big deal is.
Now even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us -- the spin masters, the negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of "anything goes." Well, I say to them tonight, there is not a liberal America and a conservative America -- there is the United States of America. There is not a Black America and a White America and Latino America and Asian America -- there’s the United States of America.

The pundits, the pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States; Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats. But I’ve got news for them, too. We worship an "awesome God" in the Blue States, and we don’t like federal agents poking around in our libraries in the Red States. We coach Little League in the Blue States and yes, we’ve got some gay friends in the Red States. There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and there are patriots who supported the war in Iraq. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.

In the end -- In the end -- In the end, that’s what this election is about. Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or do we participate in a politics of hope?

And I've known one or two. If you've made some mistakes in your hometown, it's a far away place to go to start anew.

Of course, the whole population of Alaska doesn't fit into this category, and I'm sure there are other places in the US that attract people who are trying to start over. Nothing wrong with it.

A little known piece of history is that Dwight Eisenhower was somewhat less than enthusiastic at the prospect of Alaska becoming a state because the territory was so staunchly Democratic, and he feared that having our Democratic representatives in Congress would affect th balance of power. The only way that he could be convinced to get with the program was if Hawaii (which apparently was more Republican) were also admitted to the union, which happened the next year, I guess.

Republicans didn't really take over here until all those Texans and Oklahomans moved up here during the pipeline construction, and then didn't leave (damn them). With Big Oil came Big Corruption, and where there's corruption, you'll ALWAYS find Republicans.
