Youngest Survivor on Schindler's List Speaks in Rocklin
ROCKLIN, CA - He was just 13 years old when the Nazis invaded Poland. And right away, life began to change for Leon Leyson.
The Holocause survivor brought the horrors and triumphs of his life story to a packed crowd Thursday night in Rocklin.
Leyson's father eventually started to work in Oscar Schindler's factory, and a move to be near him saved Leyson from death squads, who killed the remaining Jews in his home village.
"They did not kill numbers. They killed individual people," said Leyson, who lost both of his older brothers in the Holocaust.
.....
Leyson said a hero is someone who does their best during the worst of times. He said Schindler's growing determination to save as many Jews as he could from the death camps showed that heroism.
Leyson said Schindler showed his humanity by sometimes coming by to talk to him, "a skinny Jewish kid," as he worked on the factory floor.
"How many pieces did I make? And he didn't really want to know that...he just wanted to make human contact," Leyson said.
Schindler would sometimes make sure Leyson got a double portion of food.
