In the context of the OP, a "Principal" would be a person central to the issue at hand. her husband's business partner would be one of the principals in the adultery story. His wife is probably a witness. If, however, she got in a hair pulling cat fight with Sainted Sarah in the course of discovering the ongoing diddling, she might be a principal, too.
