Abortion doctor's killer convicted again
Edited on Thu Jan-25-07 03:40 PM by ck4829
A man already serving time in a state prison for the sniper-shooting death of a doctor was convicted Thursday on a federal charge of targeting and killing the man because he provided abortions.

The jury deliberated about four hours over two days before deciding James Kopp violated the federal Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act in the 1998 slaying of Dr. Barnett Slepian.

Kopp, who represented himself during the two-week trial, tried to convince jurors during his closing arguments that he didn't mean to kill Slepian when he fired from woods into the doctor's Amherst home. Kopp said he intended only to wound him to prevent him from performing abortions the next day.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathleen Mehltretter argued Kopp's long and careful planning of the shooting and his choice of weapon, a Russian military assault rifle, proved his deadly intent. "If you want to injure a person, you don't shoot them with a high-powered rifle," Mehltretter said.

2. I picked up an old book at a used bookstore down the road
"No Place to Hide," by Richard North Patterson. Its about a guy running for President. One of his telling campaign lines:

"The notion that James Madison wrote the Bill of Rights so that racists, and sociopaths and madmen could slaughter innocent men, women and children with assault rifles or handguns is one of the most contemptible notions that an irresponsible minority has ever crammed down the throats of is potential victims."

Sometimes you have to go to fiction for common sense.

The presidential candidate is being stalked by a good "christian" who wants to kill him because he is pro-choice. I haven't finished the book yet.

4. you know, I am quite frankly surprised that he didn't use
the, "I was hunting" defense and just claim the whole thing was an accident. Probably more probable than what he went with.

I will have to check out No Place to Hide. Thanks for the reading tip...always looking for the next nightstand holder-downer.

7. Richard North Patterson
is an amazing writer. Once you've read one of his books, you'll be hooked and will have to seek out the rest. Addiction warning!!

I've always liked that quote, by the way.

8. Love your hobbies Dear
I do like to skulk about used bookstores. I don't read fast, but I always got a book on my agenda.

3. Kopp represented himself
and in the process of cross-examining himself, basically confessed to the jury that he was guilty of the charge. Good riddance to bad trash....may he rot in a federal shithole.
