St. Paul, Minn. - If you wanted to know the difference between the Democratic and Republican conventions you saw it last night. Four nights last week of talk about the middle class gave way Tuesday night to an evening of talk about “service” - military and otherwise.
Military themes, always a strong suit for the GOP, hung heavily in the air of the arena.
Oddly, the opening night for the GOP was more about biography than the Democrats’ was - even though Sen. John McCain’s story is much better known than that of Sen. Barack Obama. The night was billed as a tribute to “the courage and service of John McCain.”...
Perhaps most important, there was one large missing piece in last night’s opening act - the economy. There were a few mentions of taxes (Republicans say Obama will raise them) and gas prices (Republicans promise McCain will drill for oil). But the broader issue of the nation’s economic well-being was not a dominant theme as it is in many of our communities.
