Rick Santorum: "All we have is the churches."
Republican former Senator from PA:

He also claimed that liberals’ influence in Hollywood and other cultural arenas helped Democrats take power in Washington.

“The left controls ... those mechanisms of power in our country,” Santorum said. “All we have is the family. All we have is the churches.”

If Hollywood studios push liberal values and churches push conservative values, why aren't they both taxed?

10. Sooo...the Republicans didn't kind of have the White House
and control of Congress for awhile and never appointed any judges, which would be, I dunno, the actual Constitutional mechanisms of power?

God. We did not get rid of that fool a minute too soon.

12. Not all the churches by any means
Most mainstream churches are scrupulous about avoiding favoritism to any particular party or candidate.

The only pre-election sermon I can recall was in Oregon, where the priest told us not to vote on the basis of personalities or vague impressions but to take out our voters' guide (which the state of Oregon mails to each household) and compare each candidate on the issues, then to vote for the candidate whose values most closely match your own.

In 2004, my church's parking lot was full of Kerry bumperstickers.

17. All candidates at every level and all ballot measures
It works like this:

Before any election, the state mails out a voters' guide to every household in the state (or the locality, if it's a local by-election).

It contains each candidate's official statement, followed by paid arguments for and against that candidate. It costs $300 to write an opinion piece for the voters' guide, and either individuals or organizations may submit an opinion. The sequence is repeated for each candidate, from president down to whatever local positions are up that year.

Once all the candidates are taken care of, the guide moves on to the ballot measures. (Oregon has initiative, referendum, and recall, so in some years, the candidates and the ballot measures have been covered in separate volumes.) It gives the legal text of the measure, a non-partisan explanation of what the measure's effects would be, and again, paid arguments for and against.

When I was undecided about candidates in non-partisan races, I found it extremely helpful to see who wrote essays for and against them. The same was true for the ballot measures. I already knew that anything sponsored by Bill Sizemore (the anti-tax crusader) or Lon Mabon (the anti-gay crusader) was an automatic "no," but some of the ballot measures on more obscure topics written by unfamiliar people required more thought, and here was where the voters' guide was extremely helpful.

Besides, if often made entertaining reading.
