A couple of words on Google Chrome....
1. Loads super fast.
2. Minimalist like Google, not much fluff.
3. Still some issues with plug-ins (Java not behaving properly)
4. 'Most Visited' function is wicked cool.
5. All in all, a very efficient browser.

1. It has a very small memory footprint so it's great for older PCs
that don't have enough memory.

The smilies lookup table launches in a fraction of the time it takes IE to launch it

8. Great for older PC's, as long as they use XP or above
Google ignored Windows 2000, which was a dumb move considering its almost identical to XP.

12. Your only option would be to go Linux
which should run well on your system and be more up to date that 2000.

20. Windows used to disappoint me all of the time.
Now I run Debian and Ubuntu on my main machines. The machine I'm using right now has a sticker on it that says "Designed for Windows 2000 Professional / Windows 98" but it only ran 2000 when it was a brand new baby. It was wiped of Windows a long time ago, and has been running Debian quite happily since.

I confess to having XP in the house, but I only use it to test things like chrome, or to see what my web pages look like to those who use the Internet Explorer Virus Magnet.

Chrome seems to be a nice small house built on a foundation sturdy enough to support a large factory. It's Open Source too, which means chrome can simply be cut loose to live in the wild should any pesky anti-trust legislation get in Google's way. Microsoft can't easily do that with Internet Explorer, and if they did they'd lose whatever competitive advantage they've gained by keeping their software closed.

5. 6. Makes Internet developer jobs much more difficult.
I like Chrome for its simplicity, but we need another (apparently non-standard) browser like we need a hole in the head.

More work doesn't equal more pay in the IT field, it just means more unpaid overtime.

7. I used to do the IT thing....
...I empathize with the unpaid overtime thingy. That's why I don't do IT anymore.

IT workers are the most exploited professionals in the entire world.

6. Chrome also allows Google to use ANY of your copyrighted material without paying you!
Astute Reg readers have pointed out a Chrome condition of service that effectively lets Google use any of your copyrighted material posted to the web via Chrome without paying you a cent.

Here's the relevant section 11.1 of the Chrome EULA:

11. Content licence from you

11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights that you already hold in Content that you submit, post or display on or through the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying the content, you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free and non-exclusive licence to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content that you submit, post or display on or through the Services. This licence is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services.

Granting Google 'a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free and non-exclusive licence to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content that you submit, post or display on or through' Chrome is coming it rich.

Taken from The Register.

Google wants to rule the internet world, you know.

17. Google wants to index everything.
Edited on Wed Sep-03-08 02:46 PM by hunter
They want to thumbnail your pictures, and archive your texts. They don't want you to complain when your embarrassing or copyrighted stuff ends up in their "cache" long after you've deleted it.

Sometimes I think google is a space-alien plot to know everything they can about humans before they invade. Or maybe it's like that Star Trek TNG where they know they're planet is about to be destroyed so they cram everything about their society they can into rockets they launch out into space.

Don't worry, you might be a random smear of ionized matter tomorrow, but your DU Lounge posts will still floating around on the cosmic internet a hundred billion years from now.

I dislike how all of a sudden, they seem to power half the web. I even dislike the DU deepsearch with google - also available when you are not registered, and makes tracing the entire DU life of a person real easy...

11. It's fast, but there's a couple things I didn't like.
There's no way of blocking ads. And considering Google sells ads, they're unlikely to add this feature to the browser.

It wanted to keep Google Update and some other functions that "call home" to Google Inc running. When an application causes my firewall to alert me every 5 minutes, I have to question what's up with that. Might be a bug, since it is still in Beta stage. I'd be willing to try it again once the final is released.

Overall, I'd say it has the potential to be a great browser, but only on ad-free sites, unless plug ins become available.

I'm staying with Firefox as it seems to be the state of the art that others rip off.

25. So you're the other one! I have maxthon, opera, firefox, ie, Google and
recently had safari for windows but uninstalled it.

Was a dedicated maxthon user for quite a while, but once I tried Opera, that was "it". Like you, I cant really explain why, it just feels right.

But I AM loving the speed that i'm getting on message boards with teh google. It's an amazing difference.
