I hate to even think it in America & no I'm not afraid...But I'm going covert
I'm a happy go lucky ex hippie type... Except when it comes to politics then I'm a bit persistent & not at all shy. I keep informed here & through C-span. I also scan the AM's at work so I feel I kinda have the pulse of America.

I also drive my beloved VW our family has nicknamed "The Obama Mobile".

I get almost unanimous thumbs up or happy responses here in the Gresham area. But once in a while you get the really angry righty flipping you off & yelling obscenities. Not a great life lesson for my girls if they are in the van but relatively harmless.

Yesterday, alone while returning from work a very large semi truck swerved toward me-driver angrily flipping me off. There was no way to get a license# to report it...But I dove past unmolested & didn't have to swerve or anything on the 2 lane road. But if my kids were in the car...Or he was a tad more aggressive. Or I run across some REAL cook listening to right wing hate radio far too long & smelling of sulfur. Well. I hate to say....I'm toning it down.

It is not a lesson I want to teach my 2 girls. the oldest watches C-span with me at times & is very smart concerning right & wrong...

Safety first & I'll get some "heavy rest" as the song Domino states...But I'll still hold my own in debates & work as hard I can to educate those that can be..

Sad day actually-Never thought I'd see the day in America where prejudices would blind such a large segment of the population....And we allowed it to happen.

Bless Y'all.
Dad 1st

1. There is such anger and hatred in our country now -- and fear.
As has been said countless times, I want my country back.

So sorry this happened to you. :pals:

2. I have a big fat Obama magnetic sign
on my refrigerator. I know if I put it on my car, that car would suffer for it in the parking garage where I work.

3. NORMAL by Martin Mull
NORMAL
Martin Mull

INTRO
Why'd we have to get so hip?
Why'd we have to take that trip? Honey…
You look dumb in dungarees and so do I.
Go put on your nicest dress and I'll put on my tie.
Here's why…….

I'm tired of rock n' rollin'
Let's get married honey, let's go bowlin'
Throw away our pot and acid
Spend the weekend at Lake Placid
It's hard to live in this town if you're strange
What say you and I get normal for a change

CHORUS
What say you and I get normal
We don't have to be that formal
We'll just sit and watch TV like others do
We'll eat meat and mashed potatoes
Cut our hair so folks don't hate us
Life is nuts enough just livin' here with you

Let's see who can be most borin'
You do the dishes honey, I'll start snorin'
Get a mower, do some mowin'
Spend all mornin' gettin' it goin'
We'll show everyone in town we're not deranged
What say you and I get normal for a change

CHORUS

BRIDGE
It's gonna change us honey, sexually
From now on, we'll just be once-a-weekers
It's gonna change us honey, even musically
We'll get our records through the mail,
Buy a set of lousy speakers (unintelligible stuff in background)

So if you'll beg my pardon
I'm goin' out and start a garden
It'll just be small potatoes
Some lettuce and tomatoes
And if either one comes up, we'll join the Grange
What say you and I get normal for a change

Repeat Chorus

Life is nuts enough just livin' here with you, it's true
Livin' here with you and Bobby McG

4. Hi there Boxerfan. Nice Bus you've got there.
Would the boxer in your name refer to the boxer engine that I'm guessing powers your bus? My uncle had a microbus with a boxer and I so loved that vehicle. I currently own a VW (sans boxer) and as much as I like it, I miss the ease of working on an air cooled, pancake four.

With regards to your OP, it is incredibly sad how only the right can feel comfortable wearing their ideology on their sleeve because they know the left doesn't advocate violence like they do. Oddly enough, you just don't see democrats shooting up ultra-conservative churches because they feel (perhaps even rightly so) that republicans are responsible for them being out of work. I hope we see a massive sea change in this country over the next four years towards a more civil and communicative society. I don't know what I'll do if things continue to get worse.

5. After Senator Barbara Boxer ripped into Condi...I became BOXERFAN,,..
Frankly I'm not a VW boxerfan even though I did rebuild this one. Maybe thats a reason I'm not much of a fan. I grew up working on Honda motorcycles & cars. VW's are funky & fun...But the bus motors suffer from being underpowered & prone to cylinder head overheating.

It's all frsh & well cared for under the negine lid. I'm not much at paint or pretty work...But we love our VW bus like a family member.

But I don't want any wackjob righty taking aim at me when my daughters are on board-or any other time for that matter. But I sure hate even making this decision...

98% of the time its smiles & thumbs up...

6. Ahhhhh, that makes sense too.
I guess I'm a boxer fan in more than one sense then. Yeah, I think any 4 cylinder powering a behemoth like that is going to be a bit under powered. However, a highly tuned boxer under the hood (trunk) of a classic 356 speedster is a thing of beauty. With a curb weight of under two tons, a little power goes a long way. With my uncle's bus, I remember sitting in the front seat and it would feel like I was in a roller coaster every time we went up a steep hill. Such good times. Keep taking good care of your daughters and your VW. Don't let the bastards grind you down.

7. That van ROCKS, and your girls!

They must be little wizards, paying attention to all this big world stuff, stuff I never thought about until college.

You're pretty brave for having the signs, I've been too chicken to even wear my Obama button but from now on I'm starting to.

My mom sent me an Obama t-shirt that I've only worn once so far.. the day a guy at my grocery store came up and told me Obama couldn't win because he's black :eyes:

8. Carry a camera with you.
When someone does that again (sadly, someone will) take pictures.

Print some out for the police, post some on DU, and you're always welcome to upload them to the Truthiness Encyclopedia, where we can all make fun of them.

Cowards always slink away when people stand up to them.

9. Girls are at school-Went to take 'em off...Can't do it....Kids will ride in Mom's car
For freeway & longer trips..
I hate the freakin choice. I'm not doing it. They kinda win if I do.

Kids first can be accomplished with using my wifes Accord(another engine I did meeself). Better mileage & has real A/C...

Thats my compromise with the Dad in me...The Democrat in me will not be silenced.

I don't even own a cell phone & rarely carry my camers-But I should. One of the jerks made a right fool of himself flipping me off & yelling f-u...I waved & smiled.

If it's any consolation, it's because those jerks are *petrified*.

12. About 10 days post-9/11
I put "God Bless the World" on my rear window in soap, i.e., good vibes for all, not just the U.S.

Believe it or not, I was scared a time or two on the road and walking into the store before the rain washed it away.
