City bans junk food in vending machines - to help city employees lead a healthier lifestyle
City bans junk food in vending machines

In an effort to help city employees lead a healthier lifestyle, Albuquerque's mayor announced that all city vending machines will now only carry healthy snacks.

The mayor says it's about saving taxpayers' money.

He says the healthier city employees are, the less the city spends on healthcare.

The order affects hundreds of machines in city buildings all over town.

The mayor listed a litany of criteria all snacks must meet. Even beverages are affected. Soda will be replaced by coffee, tea and juice. The only exception will be diet soda.

1. Why didn't he just REMOVE the machines alltogether?
Helping the employees lose weight would be a better move, wouldn't it?

2. Will they cut back work hours and give them more paid vacation time, too
Stress is at least as unhealthy as poor diet ... but it's not as much fun as telling adults what to do.
