I do freelance voice transcription on the side as an independent contractor for a large infoseeking service. It's fun and is an easy source of income for birthday gifts, buying books and music, funding my hobbies, etc.
Over the Labor Day weekend, to ensure enough workers to keep the service going, the company did a contest with a number of $200 drawings if you did a baseline amount of work.
Today someone posted in their forum that she needed the money to help pay for medical care and the amount of time her husband would be taking off work to care for her post-surgery.
The replies than ensued were heartbreaking. One needed the money because his family had been foreclosed and they were living in a motel - he needed to get together money to pay for a security deposit for an apartment. Someone who had lost a job needed it to pay for his COBRA, or else be without health insurance.
There were so many stories of how badly people needed that goddamn $200 that I wanted to cry. When $200 becomes a life-changer, than something is fundamentally WRONG with our economy. McCain simply doesn't get it, nor do his lobbyist friends or his war profiteering buddies.
By the way, there are lots of Obama supporters working there. THEY get it.
