Louisiana: Contraflow Details
August 31, 2008 - 11:12 am by Heidi VanderVelde
Baton Rouge (August 30, 2008) - As directed by Governor Jindal, Louisiana State Police will initiate contraflow at 4:00 AM Sunday morning. For the first time in history, the entire Louisiana coastal population will be evacuated due to the impending threat of Hurricane Gustav.

The southeast contraflow plan will be implemented in its entirety as shown in publicized maps (visit www.LSP.org).

For southwest Louisiana, the Lafayette area should follow the contraflow plans on I-49 North, as publicized. For the Lake Charles area, contraflow will NOT be utilized and residents are encouraged to evacuate north on US Hwy 171. US Hwy 171 at US Hwy 190 in Deridder will utilize a lane-shift in order to accommodate three (3) lanes northbound, with only one (1) lane available for southbound traffic. US Hwy 165 is an alternate route for the Southwest Louisiana area.

While traffic on I-10 in and around Lake Charles will be free to travel either westbound toward Texas or eastbound toward Baton Rouge, Louisiana State Police strongly encourage motorists to travel north, away from the hurricane impact area.

Louisiana: LDAF Providing Options for Residents Evacuating with Pets
August 31, 2008 - 11:01 am by Heidi VanderVelde
Baton Rouge (August 30, 2008) - The Louisiana Dept. of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) is providing pet evacuation services for people with critical transportation needs (CTN) and vehicles are ready and standing-by at parish pick-up points in Orleans Parish and all coastal parishes.

“We want to evacuate every pet owner and their pets in the New Orleans metro and coastal parishes with critical transportation needs,” said LDAF Commissioner Mike Strain. “We have an abundance of vehicles and they’re ready to go.”

Strain said FEMA and the MuttShack Disaster Response Animal Rescue have provided trucks and workers.

“MuttShack personnel have been working non-stop out of the LDAF office for more than 24 hours already,” Strain said.

Strain said Orleans Parish residents with pets that will need assistance to evacuate are urged to make arrangements with the Orleans Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness as soon as possible to arrange transportation to the pet friendly shelter.

“Pet owners with critical transportation needs should call 2-1-1 for additional pet evacuation information and get to the parish pick up points as soon as possible,” Strain said. “It will take time to register everyone and their pets and complete all the paperwork accurately.”
