Elizabeth Edwards cancels LI event
Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards will keep his date to speak at Hofstra University next month, but his wife, Elizabeth, won't be on the stage with him, school officials announced yesterday.

The Edwardses were scheduled to appear together on Sept. 8, but the couple have retreated from public view since John Edwards admitted last month he had an affair with a campaign videographer, Rielle Hunter, and lied to the press about it. He has denied he is the father of Rielle's 5-month-old daughter.

The free event is expected to be Edwards' first since he disclosed the affair in an ABC News interview. At that time, he said he sat for the interview alone out of deference to his wife.

"We have received word ... that Mrs. Edwards will not be appearing at Hofstra on Sept. 8, but that Senator Edwards has confirmed his intention to appear," Hofstra said in a statement released yesterday. "We regret any inconvenience this may cause our students and members of the community who had registered for the event. The event schedule remains the same."
