Expected storm surge: 15-24 feet.

The axe is for you to chop your way out of your attic.

Damn. :(

1. There Aren't Many Of Those Attics To Chop Out Of
Much of the lower 9th is still uninhabitable...I was there in March and saw block upon block of deserted house shells still left over from Katrina and lots of empty lots where houses once stood. In areas that have been rebuilding, new codes have led to an increase in modular houses set on high foundations that were designed to handle an Katrina-type flood. This is not to minimize danger or say that Gustav won't create a lot of problems in the area (see my other post... http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=3889382&mesg_id=3889448), I think the city is both smarter and more prepared this time.

Nagin is overcompensating this time so people get off their asses...he doesn't want to face the political shit he did the last time.

7. And a lot of them still have pre-installed "exit holes" from Katrina.
:O

12. Environmentally-conscious architecture shouldn't be rocket science.
Raised homes have been common in the south for centuries, not only for flooding but for air circulation. It's insane to thumb our noses at Mother Nature so willfully.

3. I'm watching the same feed
They're predicting levee overtopping and levee failure.

As a hurricane expert said, "What Katrina and Rita didn't destroy, this storm has the potential to."

4. What about the pets?
They promised last time that people would not be forced to leave their pets behind if another storm hit the city. On CNN I just heard that they were telling people to leave their pets behind. What the hey? I know many feel that saving people is more important than caring about the animals but if you leave you dog tied up in your yard he has no chance for survival in a flood. At least if they are free, them might get to higher ground or something.

Personally I don't believe in tying an animal up, but there are people that do. But if they are locked in a house, I don't know if that would be much better. Dang, I just emailed CNN to ask them about it. I don't know if they will say anything or not.

9. On the weather channel, they showed the carriers that were being provided
for the pets. There were a lot of them.

10. There were pictures posted here sometime during the night
of them loading up the pets, and that is how I finally was able to go to bed at 5 am, that means to sleep somewhere between then and 6 am. It is now noon here, been up a couple of hours, and I feel like crap. Would go back to bed with I could. Knowing that people and animals are being looked out for is making me a little less stressed.

11. We are starting to get NOLA evacuees here. 11-1/2 hours for a
trip that usually takes 4-1/2 (flying low) to 5-1/2 normal. They are tired.

Friday night, there was this Fundie crowing about how they all prayed for rain and BEHOLD... He ended up not sticking around long.

If I had my way, I would sue that Demon-Loving Dobson and his Succubus Perkins for their entire net worth, foundation and all. They want to claim responsibility, they can pay for the lost of life and property. What a bunch of Heathens.

14. Did someone not point out that they rained for rain
for last Thursday night and for it to fall in Denver. If this is an answer to their prayer then this is a punishment and he and all the fundies should go down to the coast line and accept the answer to their prayers, and leave the wealth they have accumulated to the innocent that suffer due to their pettiness. :evilfrown:

13. I have to say one good thing about Nagin
It is nice to hear a politician speaking honestly to the population for once. No spin. Just be scared and get out. Good on him for that piece.
