TYT: Hillary's Best Line: Were You In It For Me?

By Cenk Uygur

...Hillary Clinton stole the night. I have been a vocal critic of Hillary Clinton throughout the primaries and a skeptic of her intentions to unconditionally support the Democratic candidate. But she put all those doubts to rest tonight. She delivered. It was an A+ speech.

The Twin Cities line about McCain and Bush being like twins was genuinely funny. And now every time they mention the Twin Cities during the Republican convention I'm going to think of Bush and McCain as twins.

I am embarrassed to admit that the Harriet Tubman story actually gave me a chill down my spine (at least it wasn't up my leg). I loved it. I think everyone in the building loved it.

But the best line in the speech was buried in the middle. Addressing her supporters, she said, "Were you in it for me?"

What a great and poignant question. Did you really think this was all about me and not about the issues? Don't you remember that this was all about getting the people who need help the assistance that they desperately need? Did you forget that we started down this road because we wanted to provide Americans with a hope for a better future? That we wanted to make sure the rules weren't stacked against them? Did you think this was all about me?

That is the winning line. That's the one that showed me that she genuinely did her best to actually convince her followers that they had to support Barack Obama. That's not a half-hearted effort. That's a line designed to win people over to her argument not over to her personally. Ironically, that's exactly what it did for me though. At the end of this long, contentious battle, Senator Clinton won me over when she was finally not trying to win me over.

1. "Were you in it for me?" was a direct challenge to Clinton supporters who cannot seem to let go.
It's simple: Hillary Clinton put her all into a long and gruelling campaign and she was undoubtedly immensely disappointed when she lost, but she overcame that and is a strong supporter of the party's nominee, Barack Obama. No less can be asked or expected of her supporters--her real supporters and not the pseudo-Democratic pumas.

Now on to November and victory and let's kick some Republican ass!

3. I missed the speech
because I was in class but when I got home Mr Pip told me about it. That line was the first thing he mentioned. That was what stood out immediately in his mind. It may have been in the middle of the speech but it sure wasn't buried. It jumped right out and grabbed the gut.

I watched the recording of the speech and thought it was an awesome speech, the best I've ever heard her give. Unfortunately the recording ended before the Twin Cities line I keep hearing about. I'll need to find another rerun somewhere. That is a priceless line.

Not sure why it took me a minute to figure it out.

5. There is nothing Hillary could say or do at this point for me to like her.
I felt she was doing her job; she knows if she wants to be able to continue her career in politics, she'll have to appear as a loyal democrat, because republicans will never have her.

If Bill wants to be able to travel country to country pedaling his influential power in our government, he knows he better start kissing some Obama ass.

When Hillary started her, "I ran for president" segment of her speech, I felt like she was STILL running.

Everyone could praise Hillary all they want, but remember the neo-cons will use her words against us all the way to the elections.

9. Get over it - it's time our party heals and moves FORWARD
Of course we know that part of the reason for such a great speech is because Hillary wants to run again and knows she won't have a chance if she, even inadvertently, brings down Obama. That's a given.

But last night Hillary not only did what she had to do but she did even more that we could have hoped for - she said it was time we worked together to win this for the Democrats and for America. When she said "You you just in it for me" I know she meant that from her heart - she was challenging her supporters to remember that her campaign wasn't about her being the first female president but about bringing change to our government and turning our country around.

I was proud to be a democrat last night and was reminded why I still love the Clintons after all these years.

12. You agree with me, after you tell me to "get over it". ...That's just crazy.

I use to love the Clintons, now I believe they're slightly less treasonous than Bushco.

Bill's Iraqi Liberation Act called for the oust of Saddam, it laid the foundation for our invasion of Iraq.

His Telecommunication Act led to the mass consolidation of the ownership of our media. Thanks to Bill Clinton our news is brought to us by corporations profiting from Bush's corporate supporting policies.

NAFTA. Rendition. The Clintons were the "pass administration" who advised our leaders to support the IWR.

Your love for the Clintons is something you should "get over".

24. Those issues you list are correct
NAFTA, rendition, media consolidation, etc. All terrible. I don't think anyone can argue with that (certainly not me).

With that said, I can forget/ignore any negative Clinton feelings (let's see how Bill does tonight) until November 5th if need be.

:)

26. Nothing will stop me from voting for Obama over McCain.
I just wish we could air all the dirty laundry, our side included, then move forward leaving the past behind.

19. Its time to stop attacking the Clintons
if you cant stop and move on you are no better than the PUMA's - your giving reasons to fester animosity to those that the party is trying to reach out to. You can have your feeling and not like them but I hope you realize your post of distain does nothing to help Obama or the Democrats and in fact in the end hurts all democrats.

20. What I say doesn't hurt all democrats, if anything, we have to rid the party...
...of any dem who enabled the neo-cons to destroy our country.

Our party would be stronger if we forget about falling in line behind 'Bush broke no laws' Pelosi, and start supporting reps who support us.

21. As a matter of fact, to hell with the Clintons...
Instead of embracing them and letting our corporate owned and controlled media tell us that Obama can't win without Hillary's support. We should have thrown the Clintons under a bus along with Bushco and McCain.

Half the country HATES the Clintons, and most of the other half lost interest in them.

It's not to late for Obama to really unify and strengthen our party, without the Clintons help.

25. "Ignore"? How childish. ...No wonder Americans haven't a clue as to what's going on.
We have to stop putting our fingers in our ears in hope that the scary truth goes away.
