March 18 trial date set for church shooter; bond remains $1 million

A March trial date was set today for the unemployed truck driver indicted Wednesday on murder and attempted murder in last month's mass shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church.

Knox County Criminal Court Judge Mary Beth Leibowitz set a March 16 trial date for Jim David Adkisson, 58, during this morning's arraignment. He remains in jail on $1 million bond.

Public Defender Mark Stephens is seeking funding from the court to explore psychiatric defenses for Adkisson, who police say professed a hatred for "the liberal movement" and blamed it for his joblessness.

Knoxville police say Adkisson spelled out his hatred and motives in a four-page "manifesto" found in his car. They haven't made the letter public, but the indictment could bring that revelation a step closer.
