A question about timing.
My wife asked me this question and I had no answer so I'll pose it to you. Help us out here.

Why is it that the the Democratic Party always seems to go first and the Republicans get to react to it? Case in point: conventions. Why is the DNC seemingly, always before the RNC? Why do we (and this is probably related to the DNC-RNC thing) seem to pick our VP before they do?

Case in point, McCain has the advantage of picking a VP that not only will shore up his sorry ass, but also could be (should be in their minds) a good opponent for Biden.

It seems to me that going last in these cases has an advantage. Why do we seem to miss that?

1. It's alphabetical.
Actually the party in power goes second.

2. I thought we did an every-other cycle thing w/selecting convention dates
 as for the VP choice - how much longer could Obama have waited?

5. Considering the looming convention at the time, not much longer really.
But still, which ties back to the coordination of the conventions.

3. I read somewhere on DU that the party in power (the prez) goes last
Not sure if that's true, but that's what I read here last week sometime.

It does seem to be an advantage to go last and it bugs me, too.
