Working for next to nothing (left over)
Edited on Sun Aug-24-08 01:37 AM by SoCalDem
A 30 hour work-week @ $10 an hour will likely yield a little over $232.00 a week (after taxes & FICA)

That actual hourly rate might be somewhere in the neighborhood of $7.70 net..

So you worked an hour to get a gallon of gas & a half-gallon of milk..

$10hr wages usually come sans benefits, so if your kid gets sick, and you have to stay home with them, you get zero for that day you missed..and if it is often, you get NO JOB.

There are some expenses that cannot be avoided:

rent
transportation (not necessarily a car)
food
gas for heat
water
electricity

If you only had $232.00 a week to spend, how could you save for anything?

Note that there is no daycare or phone or cable-tv or health insurance or entertainment..

You might be able to find an apartment where some of the utilities were provided, but you cannot escape all of them.

If you can find someone to put you up for nothing, and loan you a car whenever you needed, you might be able to manage...but that's about the only scenario that works well..

$10 an hour in OUR time & circumstances is a "second job" and "teenager job"....not a family sustaining job..

1. welcome to MY world!
...and I have 3 kids. If I didn't ahve housing assistance, and parents and a church that cared for me, I would be SOOOOOO S.O.L. !!

Something's gotta give! I work extra freelancing gigs to try and have a "normal life" ...which means I can buy my kids shoes instead of asking my mom to take them shopping... But between cooking, cleaning, life, kids, bathtime, work at 2 other jobs, a child with a disability, a teen, laundry, my own health and healing from divorce, renting and constant moving, etc... I am pretty tired for doing extra work! especially for peanuts!

but what else am I gonna do?

"just keep swimming, just keep swimming..."

and a LOT of prayers!
