Is schadenfreude always inappropriate?

Everyone knows what "schadenfreude" is: it's that wonderful feeling people enjoy experience when seeing or hearing about someone else's impending doom misfortune.

With our ticket complete and the grassroots ready to do their best, some of us have mentioned eine kleine schadenfreude.

Was that bad?

Should we not have done that?
