Rachel Maddow
I really wish she would grow her hair out. She would look alot better with it grown out. If I didn't know her name I would swear she was a guy. I'm not trying to be rude, but it's an honest opinion I have about her. She's an excellent person and is great on TV.

3. Welcome to the modern day. She doesn't need long hair to be a woman.
Nor wear skirts, or have fake blond hair, nor wear mounds of makeup.

I'm happy for the barriers she is kicking down, and forcing people like you to take her on her own terms.

6. She doesn't have to be a news model.
Wearing makeup is a big compromise for her. Trust me. I know lesbians especially those who take the male role, which is what Rachel does. Really, let them be themselves. You know Ellen DeGeneres used to make fun of this every now and then by putting on girly clothes. It really made her look like she was in drag and that was her point. Incidentally, I have always worn my hair very short because it just looked better that way and no one took me for a guy and I'm not a lesbian. I think Rachel has a lovely face that suits her hair do.

16. True. I guess there is no way to say this without offending anyone because
people aren't ready for it yet. I'm just happy that she's getting the acceptance that she is and I wouldn't want any producer or news director telling her she has to put on clothes or wear her hair in ways that would make her uncomfortable with herself.

19. Thanks
I just hate when people are like "who's the male" in a lesbian relationship. Not every female is girly girl (and that doesn't make them 'male') and not every boy is macho-tough (and that doesn't make them 'girly').

Just a pet peeve. Sorry. :)

55. Maybe a little defensive of Miss Maddow, yes.
Probably silly of me, but I first started hearing a bit of her act on Unfiltered when AAR was born; loved her early morning show; fretted when she got moved to an early-evening slot and feared she'd be eased out.

I'm really proud for her, from a distance, is all. And yeah, I'll probably be a little over the top in my defense sometimes.

the short hair accents her beautiful eyes and mouth...long hair tends to make long faces look longer.

I have to add, I wear mine short because long hair is a pain in the neck and time consuming to dry.

enough raw talent that she can get away without going for the big hair country look. Some people are short haired people. Some people, like me, prefer their hair a little longer. I just find it easier to take care of when it is longer. I'm sure Maddow finds her short do works best for her.

Your post IS rude, because your opinion of beauty and that of most here on DU is off by about 90 degrees. Her rise to fame as a media personality has to do with her wit, charm, and amazing insight into the political condition of this country, not because she needs to look hot to a guy.

50. I was just thinking about Rachel's hair today!
No, seriously. When she was on MSNBC today in a less formal setting--I don't know whether she did her own makeup or not, but her clothes were much more casual--she didn't look quite as drop-dead gorgeous as usual, but I mean that in a good way. She looked like a natural beauty.

Anyway, seeing her look a little different from usual today, I remembered watching her during the primaries one time right after she got her hair cut too short, and I had even mentioned to my kids that I liked her hair better when it was longer. Not that it was ever long-long, just collar length--but she'd gotten kind of a harsh buzz cut that time and it didn't look as good.

Personally, I don't think long hair would look good on her--I think the way she's got it right now is perfect. I think it frames her face and shows off those incredible dark eyes. With longer hair she might just look like a generic Female News Person. (Although with those gorgeous eyes she could probably never look truly generic...!)

For what it's worth, I think her hair is very becoming as is.

But, really....talking about her hair is silly. She's a serious, thoughtful analyst. Naturally, no one would discuss, say, Howard Fineman's hair. It's an insult to Rachel Maddow and other women journalists to talk about this silly, trivial kind of thing.

61. Wow. You say you're not trying to be rude, but you are...
First of all, if she wants to look like a guy, why shouldn't she?

And as someone who has been watching her since she first started appearing on AAR 4 years ago, I can tell you that she has gone out of her way to glam up for this gig, wearing makeup, and has made her hairstyle more feminine. I suspect that doing so is not her taste but that she feels that a little compromise is worth the access to the venue.

The democratic party is a diverse one. Rachel Maddow is an out lesbian, and probably not a super-femme one, and I would hope that the party would be okay with that, and that eventually, even corporate news outlets would be okay with that. Why the hell do all women on TV have to look like painted tarts anyway?

63. Well, first of all...
...I disagree with you that she would "look better" with longer hair. I think her hair is perfect for her facial features, and I also think she is a very attractive looking woman.

Maybe she is a bit androgynous looking, I don't know. And I don't care. She still is quite good looking.

Secondly, besides being very photogenic, she is calm, cool and poised, even when dealing with a bunch of howling lackeys. I've seen her smack down three right wing fuckwads at a time and make it look easy. See, she not only has brains, she not only can think on her feet, but she also has a body of knowledge to back up her claims. She is *deadly* to those spouters of talking points.

So, like the saying goes, "I wouldn't change a hair on her head."

66. y'know, I actually used to envy lesbians for one big reason:
They could just lob a big F U to ANY man who felt entitled to critique their appearance--knowing the jerk wasn't a gender member of their possible sex partners.

Ask any straight woman: how many of us have listened to men tell us we'd be a lot sexier if we dressed more slutty or lost 10 pounds or got a boob job or wore more/less makeup, et al??? It's such ingrained sexism that guys actually feel confident enough in their social role to voice this shit out loud. And unfortunately, women are either not confident enough in their superficial assets (thanx to the impossible, unattainable standard) or else they're afraid of coming across bitchy or butch, negating their own sexual chances.

But as for Rachel, if she read this drivel from the OP, she would just dismiss it as the pathetic crap it is. Because these idiot male comments don't mean jack to a lesbian.

Which is why I used to envy them. I don't anymore, cuz I'm too old to care!
