(08-22) 11:51 PDT OAKLAND -- Little Lance was one of two dogs shot, thrown out of a car and left for dead at an East Oakland street corner earlier this month. Bullets tore through his spinal cord and leg and shattered a tooth, leaving the animal helpless and racked with pain.

The other dog died, but Lance underwent surgery and, today, limped out the door at the Oakland Animal Services shelter to begin living at a foster home, a happy coda to what authorities said was one of the most extreme cases of animal cruelty they had seen.

"He's really fighting," said Nadine Knutson, 63, of Oakland as her new charge, a brown, 23-pound mix, sniffed at news cameras. "He's really getting better, and he has the spirit to get better. I loved his story. I hated what happened to him."

Today, the dog, which appeared to be part Chihuahua, showed no signs of being frightened of humans despite the abuse he had suffered. "It's amazing they forgive," Knutson said.

Officials have received nearly $15,000 in donations to help pay for Little Lance's care. Donations can be made at www.oakandsanimals.org or by sending a check to Friends of the Oakland Animal Shelter, 1101 29th Ave., Oakland, CA 94601.
