The family of a 23-year-old man who died in the Clark County Jail last August has filed a lawsuit against the county, the sheriff and jail employees allegedly involved, claiming he was either killed in the jail by angry officers or was allowed to commit suicide even though he was known to be mentally ill.
Timothy J. O’Meara was found in a holding cell on Aug. 22, 2007, unconscious and “cold to the touch” with his jaws locked, the lawsuit claims.
An autopsy found a six-inch jail-issued toothbrush in O’Meara’s stomach and a 4-1/2-inch burrito lodged in his throat.
The toothbrush and burrito indicate O’Meara was either “silenced” by jail officers or was inadequately supervised and allowed to kill himself by attempting to swallow the intact burrito, said Jeff Davis Wenning, the family’s lawyer.
