It's 10 minutes to Doomsday, do you know where your anthrax is?
So this is kind of a strange article from CNN yesterday:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/08/21/military.biolabs.ap/index.html

"Military leaders have suspended some activities at biological research laboratories to review safety rules for some of the world's deadliest germs and toxins, including how they are shipped through FedEx and other civilian carriers."

Huh? They ship germs and toxins through Fedex? WTF?

The article notes:

"Accidents happen, and there have been cases in which shipments have gone missing, been damaged or lost. In one case reported to the government, plague bacteria that was supposed to be delivered to the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in 2003 ended up in Belgium. . . "

Whoopsies!

Not to worry, though, the palgue "was incinerated safely."

How do we know that? The military says so? How did the person who got this special delivery know it was plague bacteria? This all sounds very dubious to me, call me crazy.

Another point of interest:

"The Army has six, the Navy five and the Air Force two labs where biomedical research is done to support counterterrorism efforts, research protection for the armed forces and keep track of infectious diseases around the globe. Employees work with a range of dangerous materials such as anthrax and germs that cause avian flu and encephalitis."

All you have to say is we're experimenting with anthrax, avian flu and encephalitis to "support counterterrorism efforts" and the guestioning ends there.

What is all this "research" for exactly? Are using bioweapons against al-Qaeda or is this in case al-Qaeda uses it against us? And why is the military keeping "track of infectious diseases around the globe"? Aren't there a number of different civilain organizations that already do that?

So many guestions this article brings to mind . . .

Chances are you've got about a 99% better chance of getting avian flu or encephalitis through your food or being bit by a mosquito than you do from an attack by AQ. Is what the military finds out with all this "reasearch" being forwarded to the CDC or anything crazy like that?

Btw, why the hell the does the Air Force need two "biomedical research" labs, anyway?

You'll happy to know that, however, according to CNN, "The Air Force, which said its labs handle bacterial, viral, fungal and toxin agent samples, said its samples were all accounted for . . . "

They have guys in missile silos snoozing away, they ship nuke parts to Taiwan that were supposed to be replacement battery packs for Hueys (it took them 18 months to discover the little "mix up") and they lost six nuclear warheads for a couple of hours -- but you can rest assured they know where their toxins are!

And the Navy?

A Navy spokesman, Cmdr. Jeff A. Davis, says "out of an abundance of caution," according to CNN, Navy Secretary Donald Winter has "ordered the suspension of activities . . . to make sure the handling of sensitive biological material is safe at its labs: two in the United States and one each in Peru, Egypt and Indonesia."

Peru? Egypt? Indonesia?

The mind boggles. What are they really up to in Egypt? No chance of AQ getting their hands on our bioweapons in Egypt!

I appreciate that CNN brought this information to our attention, but what's even more disturbing than the information contained in the article is how calm they seem about the whole thing. 'Hey, the military says they've got it under control, so on to the Big Foot story . . .'

I'm going to go ahead and curl up into the fetal position now . . .
