My "special" son says go see Tropic Thunder !
Okay, we're not movie reviewers, buy my mentally challenged adult son and I saw this movie yesterday.

And neither of us were OFFENDED. Best movie I've seen all year. My side still hurts from laughing so hard.....and I have to see it again because I literally was on the floor laughing my ass off most of the time.

:toast: Enjoy it!

1. Is it out on video yet?
Or were you on the floor of the theater?
Isn't Robert Downey in it? I think he's good.

2. Glad to hear that. I wanted to see it because of the cast. Now I will have no qualms.

3. I'm thinking about going to see it tomorrow
It does look damn funny. I saw a few moments of the Tyra Banks show today, and she was saying it was hilarious as well. So, everyone is offended besides actual handicapped and black people.

Thankfully I'm not easily offended. I don't get how those that are can handle being on the internet.

Amazing.

10. In context of the movie, yes...it's an equal opportunity "offender"
but mostly egocentric Hollywood. It's a hard movie to describe. Be sure to wear your "humor" hat :)

11. That's not what I said
And of course she doesn't. But people who are being "Negatively portrayed" are handling this better than those who think they're standing up for them. The only complaints I've seen are from people who vaguely know someone who has a mental retardation, or someone who has a relative that is half black. Jeez.

13. Oh, OK, that makes much more sense.
When you say "the only complaints I've seen are from people who vaguely know someone who has a mental retardation, or someone who has a relative that is half black" it's a lot different than "So, everyone is offended besides actual handicapped and black people." Because I've seen a lot of complaints from people who are black and who do have mental retardation or take care of someone who does. That's all. "Jeez."

18. It's marketing, ain't it great.....
Like I said in my OP, I took my 34 year old "Forrest Rainman" to see it, and he enjoyed every second, then again, I think he "gets" parody and satire more than most DUers!

It's a hard movie to describe, it's so loaded with spoilers!

19. It's not that much different
Perhaps I misworded my original post. I didn't mean to imply EVERYONE but they are offended, but those who are offended are not the people who are supposedly being mocked. But you don't have to be such a jerk. I didn't do anything to you.

I haven't heard how studio heads or agents feel about the way they were portrayed.

24. Jack Black, and many cameos....
I think the marketing (boycott! offensive!) was brilliant. I want to see it again now that I don't have to brace myself to be "mad". LOL.

17. Pfft.
I took a "break" from VP watch asking people to send flowers in memory of Stephanie Tubbs Jones (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=3829668&mesg_id=3829668) and got nothing.

This thread is going on my "hidden threads" list.

It really belongs in "The Lounge".

15. I'm glad to hear you and your son liked it.
My niece and I went last Friday and found the humor vulgar, juvenile and in questionable taste - we nearly collapsed we were laughing so hard.

I didn't find the scenes that people have objected to to be offensive (given the context) as there didn't seem to be any malice in them - but I wasn't sure if I wasn't rationlizing that.

So tell me, the way the theater we saw it at went from the previews into the 1st scene of the movie caught us off guard - if Ben Stiller had been there he could have pointed at us and yelled "Gotcha!" - how about where you saw it? (Be honest)

20. That's why I have to see it again.....
...and again I don't want to spoil...but the beginning of the movie in the theater I saw it in...wasn't what it appeared to be either! I missed the damn joke.

Not until the end, it was a MAJOR Gotcha on Hollywood. Sort of like, Sixth Sense, only funnier :)

Sounds like you enjoyed it. :hi:

I have forgiven Tom Cruise for being such a loon after seeing his performance in that movie. He had me laughing for days!

25. OMFG, Cruise was over the top.....
he developed that character himself, take that Hollywood! LOL. That dance in the credits roll was from Risky Business.

Not to spoil for others, this was the film Owen Wilson was cast in, until his unfortunate "illness" had his character recast.

I didn't know who it was until....

29. Valentine Michael Smith said that it's pain that makes people laugh
and by laughing we're able to deal with that pain. I walked through protesters to see Blazing Saddles and The Life Of Brian back in Oklahoma. I laughed walking at them walking in, laughed my ass off while I was in the theater and laughed in their face when I walked out.

Please don't censor humor. It's the only thing that keeps a lot of us sane.

30. That's why I put this thread in GD
There were a few here that wanted us to boycott the movie for "sensitive" material.

I told them in those threads I would take my mentally challenged adult son and report back!

If you liked Blazing Saddles and The Life Of Brian, you'll like this one too :hi:
