Eight reported dead as Spanair flight crashes

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Eight were reported dead on Wednesday as a flight from Spanair crashed in Madrid.

The deaths came as a jet operated by Spanair, a unit of SAS , skidded off the runway on take-off. Billowing smoke was clearly visible from television images of the crash.

The flight was headed toward the Canaries, a popular vacation island, the Associated Press reported.
The crash came just hours after the airline's pilot union blasted "organized chaos" at Spanair. SAS had announced a plan to cut over 1,000 jobs.

The jet was said to have the capacity to hold 160 passengers.
