I just want one text message, not "periodic text updates". I wonder why I can't just opt for one?

You want one message regarding the VP. They want your cell phone number so they can ask you for money, send you talking points, etc. (I didn't sign up for the text messages, just the email, so I didn't realize that until you showed me the disclaimer, but it makes sense.)
