Looks like the Hummer is History
Despite how badly GM wants to dump the Hummer, a looming global recession (and of course high oil prices) may be putting the kibosh on that plan.

General Motors (GM) had been in preliminary talks with automakers across Asia (including those in India and Russia) regarding the sale of its Hummer division. But now Chinese SUV maker Hunan Changfeng has broken off talks with GM and no longer has any interest in purchasing the gas-guzzler. Their remarks do not bode well for GM

<snip>

http://www.clusterstock.com/2008/8/now-even-china-doesn-t-want-gm-s-hummer?Hummer

GM dealers won't accept them for trade. Owners (read: debtors) can't give them away.
Saw an 05 H2 recently in the owners yard with a sign on the windshield:

For Sale. 05. Low mileage (duh). $8,000 OBO. I'd bet the dude dropped as least $40K
on the original purchase. Sympathy? No way in hell.

53. How does the specific energy of NG compare to gasoline?
I don't believe it's very good. While NG may be available for a buck a gallon, I believe the fuel economy on natural gas would go way down. Where as a typical H2 might average 15mpg, I'd imagine that on natural gas it would be 5mpg or less. Do you know the specifics of how it compares?

19. True story...
I took my baby girl (3) with me to go to breakfast one morning. We stopped at a local grocery store so I could get something (don't remember what).

A great big yellow hummer was parked across not one, not two, but three parking spaces, and, I shit you not... one of them was a handicapped space.

I waited a while for the owner to come out of the store, but it took a little too long, so I left. Low and behold, as I pulled out, I saw someone get into it. I manuevered so we'd wind up at the same red light.

At the light, I lowered my window to say something (he was on my right). He saw and lowered his. I smiled and said, "Nice car." He smiled and gave me a 'thumbs up'.

I asked; "Say, does it come with that feature or do you have to pay extra?"

He said, "Which one?"

"The one that lets you park like a jackass."

He looked a little injured and pissed, I smiled and rolled my window up as the light turned green.

Always my biggest pet peeve with people who drive big fucking cars for nothing more than status. So insecure they have to announce their importance with a POS they can't even park.

35. Another True Story to add
several months ago (Yes, when gas prices were going up and up and up). A co-worker at the grocery store where I work, bought one (none of us could figure out why at the time). She bought a late model used H2 against her husbands advice and while she lives very close to work, so gas isn't too big a problem, It dawned on Miss Showboat that Yes, her neighbors would vandalize her land yacht, that long trips were VERY expensive and that GREAT deal she got on it, somehow didn't translate into savings at the pump. So now we are hearing regrets when she speaks of it at all, but that is very, very rarely......

Because it's a behemoth not a being, I don't feel the least bit of remorse.

Regarding the penis: I suggested long ago on a similar (but vastly inferior) board that Hummer owners should sport a bumpersticker that said:

My Other Penis is a Penis

As for me, I'd like to wear a T-shirt that says

Real Men Don't Have to Pay for their Hummers

Good riddance. I never understood the Hummer craze in the first place, but as Norman Bates once put it: "We all go a little mad sometimes."

54. Hummer mileage story!
MG Jr. (4) is a huuuuge car fan, so we took him to the new-car show at our local convention center last spring. Of course I spent the entire time peeking at window stickers for MPG (and they were all pretty pathetic--talk about the car companies being out of touch!) Mr. MG pointed out how the two Hummers didn't have stickers AT ALL. So we hung around them, eavesdropping, as most people at the show were very concerned about gas mileage. Sure enough, a beefy tough-guy type spending a lot of time examining the Hummers asked the rep what the mileage was. The rep did a really nice tap dance to avoid the question, but the guy kept pressing him, so he finally relented:

7 mpg

Edited on Tue Aug-19-08 10:51 AM by MorningGlow
The sick thing is the original Hummer had a smaller gas tank (25 gal. according to the intertubes) and got (relatively) better mileage (16 mpg).

But...32 mpg. x $4.00 = $128.00 for a fillup. Couldn't happen to a better bunch of people than idiots who buy Hummers.

62. H2 mileage isn't THAT bad.
H1s and H2s get very similar mileage. Where as the H1 with its massive 8000 lbs to haul around has a turbo diesel powering it, so its fuel economy greatly benefits greatly from that. The H2 weighs at least a ton less than the H1, but it's powered by a conventional gas V8 from the Suburban, Yukon, Escalade, etc. The H2s certainly don't get in the single digits (well, maybe if you were flooring it going uphill you would). The H3 is powered by an inline five cylinder codeveloped with Saab, and is lighter than the H1 and H2 and as such gets better fuel economy than both of them. That site has a lot of wrong information on it. It states that all Hummer vehicles are considered to be heavy duty, only the H1 is. The rest weigh well under 4 tons.

63. I always thought an H1 running on biodiesel
would make a dandy utility random-large-crap dragger for a farm. They sit high, get good traction, and the diesel has low end torque out the wazoo. Ugly as sin, but might be good if put to real work.

The H2 and H3 are just posermobiles, and pathetic ones at that...a new Tahoe running E85 does everything the H2 can do, only much better. And you can see out of the damned thing too.

Me? I'd rather have a diesel Sprinter. Much more room than an SUV ever could have...I could pretty much fit the whole band in one, PA and all...as long as we're dreaming about vehicles we can't afford... :D

65. I believe H2s can run on E85 as well.
It is the same 6 liter they use in the Tahoe. And if GM retrofits it for E85 in the Tahoe, I don't know why they wouldn't do it in the H2 as well. However, I've seen no plans to make an H2 hybrid like they've done in the very highly regarded Yukon/Tahoe hybrid. And I'm sure that many farmers would love to have an H1 available if they could afford one. As for the sprinter you want, I think they're pretty cool vehicles. It's great that they have a diesel option, but they seem so incredibly huge to be powered by a 6 cylinder diesel. I'd imagine they have a pretty poor power to weight ratio (although a great fuel economy to weight ratio) which would make them difficult to drive in certain places. Also, I hate getting stuck behind one because they're just impossible to see around. And I think their tallness is great for loading it up with stuff and occupant comfort, but I wonder if they have a really high center of gravity that would make them prone to rollovers. Regardless, Dodge seems to have no problem selling them.

42. Maybe he got one of those generous Bush* tax breaks on the HOG.
I bet some smart person could re-engineer the vehicle with a power system more economical. As a hobby, of course.

Or put it in the back yard and let the kids use it for a playhouse.

Slap Micheal Phelps and Brittany Spears together in a Hummer and pretty much every Hummer made will sell in 10 days.

They're still everywhere here in Bushville Suburbia, Texas
Everytime I see one, I just sneer and shake my head at the driver.

49. Ive had my eye
on a Suburban down the block... he bought it new in 2005. The for sale sign started at 14,000 it is now down to 9,000. when it hits 5,000 I will snap it up. I need a new WORK truck for heavy loads. NOT for everyday driving like he bought it for. he bought my old 1989 Subaru for 3,000 last march! BTW It's the same GOPer that lived in his garage last winter. UPDATE; he finished his house and moved in. No drywall as yet, the mcMansion he built across the road is now a RENTAL with no less than 10 college students in it. Party time! he says he is still undecided as to whom to vote for...

51. Apparently, the Russians like them...
DU thread--

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x3821215">Russian troops take prisoners and drive away in American humvees!

...at least the military version. And the fact they didn't pay for them might also make them all the more attractive.

66. never to worry, I figure a hummer hybrid is in the works
they will remove the stigma of being a gas guzzling monster with a hybrid label and still charge a mint on the sticker price.

When we were SUV shopping, a lot tried to sell me a hummer, it wasn't that great big model, but the smaller one. This was several months ago and they were trying to sell it to me for like 20,000, which was relatively cheap for a hummer, but I don't like them, I think they are ugly myself and they suck in mpg.

72. If that guy wants to sell that Hummer...
...he should make some minor rennovations and he could easily rent
it out as a 2 bedroom bungalow.
