English-only Blowhards freaked out by the rise of Spanish-language news.....

....and check out the mental midget's conclusion in the last paragraph. He's a self-appointed Latino studies expert.

from the American Family Assn.'s OneNewsNow right-wing propaganda "news" service:

Illegal aliens driving popularity of Spanish newscasts
Chad Groening - OneNewsNow - 8/16/2008 4:20:00 AM

An English-language advocate says it's because of illegal immigration that Spanish-language television newscasts are growing in popularity in the United States.

According to wcbs.com, within the last few months, Spanish-language station WXTV's 6 p.m. newscast has eclipsed its English-speaking competitors on ABC, CBS, and NBC stations in popularity among viewers younger than age 49. And according to Nielson Media Research, its sister station KMEX in Los Angeles had more viewers in June for its newscast than any of its English competitors, regardless of age.

Jim Boulet, executive director of English First, says it is interesting that according to Nielson, in 1995, 62 percent of Hispanic viewers in New York watched English language television over 38 percent who viewed Spanish-language TV. But last year Hispanics there favored Spanish stations 71 to 29 percent. This change, according to Boulet, is easy to explain: illegal immigrants from Mexico and Central America have not assimilated like Puerto Ricans and Cubans.

"The legal ones tend to get their news in English, where the illegal immigrants want their news in Spanish. They want to see what is going on in their home country," Boulet contends. "Plus, the illegal immigrants prefer the tone of Univision and Spanish-language news because it's all 'rah rah illegal immigrant, rah rah amnesty, aren't you wonderful?' Whereas the English language news tends to talk about immigration enforcement and that depresses them."

2. The same families speak the same language in the same town for 400 yrs.
All of a sudden, they're anti-American illegal immigrants.

The so-called "American Family Association": There's nothing "American" about it and is merely a GOP-front org - not an association of or for families.

8. They weren't considered really white at the time
The definition of race and whiteness has always been fluid and convenient.

6. That's funny. I heard an economist talking about pensions
and an aging demographic this morning. He said these freeps should look at immigrants and think, "I will get my Social Security when I retire".

7. What a load of bullshit!!
I occasionally watch the Spanish news broadcasts here in NM and most of the time is spent on US news unless it's one of the direct feeds from Mexico, and even they feature US news.

Spanish is a high context language, though, so they don't get to use a lot of the loaded right wing language we hear in US broadcasts.

As for assimilation, I'd like to hand him a clue phone. New Mexico was settled from Mexico and people here will remind him that their families have been here for nearly 500 years, newcomer, and they've been speaking Spanish that long and will continue to speak it, and their pedigree is much better than his. He'd do well to remove that English Puritan plank from his eye.

Boulet is another dumb bunny who resents hearing people speaking another language because of course they are talking about him, and it's unflattering. It's typical of the English only blowhard mindset.

10. Yours is exactly the point I wanted to make! Spanish language news isn't all about RW Propaganda!
I don't speak Spanish fluently, but I can read and understand it okay. And I can tell ya all, watching Telemundo or Univision means you get a lot more objectivity than the corporate-controlled MSM in the US.

Did it ever occur to the crazy racist wingnut who's so fucking scared of other people that a cultural exchange isn't gonna diminish him???? That learning another language is merely a window into humanity and enhances us as people???

I swear I've never seen so many validated xenophobes in the "give us your tired, your poor..." America!!! WTF is WRONG with these bigoted idiots?? (PS: rhetorical question)

11. North American Anglos are some of the most linguaphobic people in the universe
They hold two contradictory views:

1. Learning a foreign language is so hard that they couldn't possibly do it, and even if they tried, it would take away time from more "valuable" subjects

2. Learning a foreign language is so easy that every immigrant should speak English the minute he or she crosses the U.S. border

The corollary is that everyone the bigot encounters in a foreign country MUST speak English.

12. "The corollary is that everyone the bigot encounters"
So true....I remember an American shouting down a vendor in Puerta del Sol in Madrid because his English wasn't good. "I can't understand you! I can't understand you!"

After she left, I apologized to the man in Spanish. He said something to the effect, "It's OK, there are jerks from everywhere."
