Chimp's K9 bomb sniffing dogs dognapped...then recovered
Yes, it is a real article.

http://www.nbc5i.com/news/11213000/detail.html

A woman's precious pets are back home safe after being stolen with her van. But these animals aren't just any dogs -- they are highly trained drug and bomb sniffing dogs.

It was a pleasant end to an angst-filled day for the owner of the dogs, Nancy Bidwell. Beau the bomb-sniffing dog and Sam the drug-sniffing dog had been found alive and well in Kaufmann County.

<snip>

The dogs were inside Nancy's van when it was stolen overnight Wednesday from the parking lot of the La Quinta Inn in Mesquite. The dogs and Bidwell were on their way to Crawford for training exercises. After fearing the worst about the fate of her dogs, Bidwell got the call she'd been praying for around 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Beau and Sam have been used for security purposes whenever President George W. Bush is in town.

1. And the Secret Service does not own and control those dogs?
How very, very odd.

4. Well, and my first thought was..

if these security dogs have been out of the owners site/vision, are they not now a potential secuity issue themselves?? Totally tinfoil hat, I know, but given what they do and what areas they have access to, I imagine they will be getting a head to tail, inside/out vet visit before their next "job"

On edit...and now the owner's name of these security dogs has been made public, how not cool is that, also? The fact that she leaves them UNattended, out of her sight in a public area, she may have some 'splaining to do.

5. I didn't even think of that.

But you're absolutely right. Those dogs now constitute a security risk, and don't think that your observation is not so tinfoil-covered that the Secret Service didn't also think of it.

Edited to add that I bet she just lost her security contract.
