100th Anniversary of the Springfield Riot.

The Springfield Race Riot rocked Springfield, IL 100 years ago on August 14. A horrible event. Helped to give rise to the NAACP.

4. It hasn't been widely written about.

I spent a lot of time in Springfield as a kid--an uncle and his family were there. Yet, in all that time, I never heard anything about this. Springfield was embarrassed by it, for obvious reasons. But there's now a walking tour laid out with markers on the sidewalks. There's an exhibit about it at the Lincoln Museum as well.
