Hawaii, where Obama grew up, is "exotic" and "dangerous" to Cokie's sensibilities, which are, of course, the exact same sensibilities of all good, true and real Americans. And since Obama would rather spend time with the friends and family of his formative years, instead of in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (where the aforementioned gt&r Americans reside, summer and hobnob), it's pretty clear in Cokie's mind that Obama is not a gt&r American.

Sure, 40 years ago when a trip to Hawaii was the price on Truth or Consequences, and Greg Brady had that bad luck charm that got him knocked unconscious while surfing, yeah, Hawaii was a little exotic. But now it's just like a Carnival Cruise. From where Cokie sits, with safaris to Nepal and Antarctica, all the little people's vacations must seem about the same, so it would be hard to tell Hawaii from Las Vegas from anywhere else that could or could not be exotic in the little people's eyes.
