Georgia picks a fight it is unlikely to win

Paul Woodward, Online Correspondent

Last Updated: August 10. 2008 9:20PM

UAE / GMT “The conflict between Russia and the former Soviet republic of Georgia moved toward all-out war on Saturday as Russia prepared to land ground troops on Georgia's coast and broadened its bombing campaign both within Georgia and in the disputed territory of Abkhazia," The New York Times reported.

"The fighting that began when Georgian forces tried to retake the capital of the South Ossetia, a pro-Russian region that won de facto autonomy from Georgia in the early 1990s, appeared to be developing into the worst clashes between Russia and a foreign military since the 1980s war in Afghanistan."

The Times said: "After days of heavy skirmishing between Georgian troops and Russian-backed separatist militias in the breakaway republic of South Ossetia, Mikhail Saakashvili, the Georgian president, went on television on Thursday evening to announce that he had ordered an immediate unilateral ceasefire. snip

"Devoted to achieving Nato entry for Georgia, Saakashvili has sent troops to Iraq and Afghanistan - and so clearly felt he had American backing. The streets of the Georgian capital are plastered with posters of George W Bush alongside his Georgian protege. George W Bush avenue leads to Tbilisi airport. But he has ignored Kissinger's dictum: 'Great powers don't commit suicide for their allies.' Perhaps his neoconservative allies in Washington have forgotten it, too. Let's hope not."

2. Really?
I didn't see any mention of that in the article.

But I wouldn't doubt it.

they'll be SORELY disappointed.

8. What the hell did Condi say to the boy when she was there in July?

Is this another one of those April Glaspie situations?

Rice said in her comments with Saakashvili on July 10: "We have noted concerns that violence should be -- should not be carried out by any party."

See? What if he only heard the first part of it?

CE.CN:

"'It (Russia) needs to be a part of resolving the problem and not contributing to it,' Rice told a joint press conference with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili on Thursday.

'It is very important that all parties reject violence as an option. There must be a peaceful solution,' she said, adding that she would be seeking high-level talks in an effort to find a solution to the long-running conflicts in Georgia."

Oh Russia has decided to resolve the onflict alright! They're going to make sure there's everlasting peace for a lot of Georgians and for Saakashvili, too, if he's not careful.

Here's the kicker:

"Rice also expressed support for Georgia's bid to join the NATO, saying that being a NATO member was Georgia's future.

She said the south Caucasus nation will hopefully be admitted to the north Atlantic alliance's Membership Action Plan in December, paving the way to its full membership."

Hey, there's that great reverse midas touch again. Tell the Russians "what they need to do" and then stick them in the eye with the whole NATO thing.

14. Yeah if Saddam were still around
he could have given Saakashvili a heads up that a green light for military action to a puppet regime coming out of Washington don't mean shit in the greater scheme of things.

15. They were seeking to join NATO, that is why Russia did this.
In part to prevent it. In part to gain control of the land before they joined NATO.

11. Sorry Mr. Saakashvili but loyalty is kind of a one way street with
the Bush/Cheney crime family.

And to show his admiration for the U.S. leader, Saakashvili has named the main road to Tbilisi's airport George W. Bush Street. Indeed, his face adorns a billboard on the side of the road.

But it seems to be all for show. Locals still go by the street's original name. They get mail delivered to Melaani Street and don’t seem to care much for politics.

They're too concerned with bread and butter issues, like making sure there’s enough gas and electricity to get through the winter.

George Bush's face adorns a billboard on the
side of the main road to Tbilisi's airport
In fact, many in Georgia believe their President might have too much in common with their Bush's botched war in Iraq and immigration policies.

You've heard of the Bridge to Nowhere...here is the matching road. Ya gotta think that street name was circled on the Russian pilot's maps.

And methinks the fine Georgians, hoping boooshie will be their "savior" will be waiting for a while...a long, long while...

Fools...all of 'em.

More of the "booosh legacy"...
