Great article in Saturdays NYT about the South Ossetia situation
Edited on Sun Aug-10-08 02:05 PM by panader0
South Ossetia won de facto independence from Georgia in 1992. as did Abkhazia, on the shores of the Black Sea. When Saakashvili was elected president of Georgia a few years ago, he made reunification with South Ossetia a main focus. South Ossetia has sought Russia's aid since then. Georgia appears to me to have started this thing. I think it would be a huge mistake for the US to get involved.
Sorry, no link

1. you got it right.
First, it is a mistake because Georgia started this by launching a full scale artillery bombing of the SO capital Tskhinvali, which is an obvious war crime.

3. Georgia did start it
over a matter of stupid national pride and a longing for what it imagines to be its former glory.

South Ossetia is 75% Russian and they would like to stay that way. Most of the people there with passports hold Russian passports, and that tells you where the region's loyalty lies.

I've been reading offshore press on this thing and everyone seems to agree that Georgia is in the wrong.

Unfortunately, the GOPs will undoubtedly back them. One of their lobbyists is on McSame's campaign and you can bet the energy lobbyists infesting the White House will also be having hissy fits on Georgia's behalf.
