Olympiads should meet all somewhere in the US and be greeted by the President before the games begin.

And there should be a commemorative photograph.

I am sure you're right that the "kids" love having their president there. It's just one more honor that makes this moment in their lives so special.

In the end, it's a balance thing.

I think the president throws out an opening baseball pitch or something, right? There's precedence and having a president watch you at the Olympics probably means a LOT. But in the end, I think going to the Olympics is a larger chunk of time than a president should give to a sports event.

I think what might be better, sort of like the SuperBowl Champs going to Disney, is that the most recent past president go to the Olympic games in entirety.

Part of the stink is that no sitting president, including W, has attended an overseas Olympics up till this year.

Bush's camp initially tried to pass it off as attending just the opening ceremonies as a way of paying tribute to the team. Well, he's now still there 3 days after the ceremonies and tribute could have easily been paid at the pre/post competition invite to the WH.

As someone said in a different thread it's becoming all about him. I think he knows this is the last time he's going be on the international stage and have anyone other than his base give a shit. Look at the events he's been shown attending (all events that have high media appeal - basketball, volleyball, swimming and opening ceremonies, etc).

Personally, we're probably better off with him over there than over here in the Oval Office.
