Man goes to jail for killing girlfriend’s dog, stuffing it in ceiling

The mystery began last year with Duchess the dog’s disappearance from a Shawnee home. It ended Friday with her killer sentenced to jail.

The strange matter started when Mathew John Hodges, 21, went to the home with his girlfriend in July 2007 to meet her parents. The next night, while going to bed in the family’s finished basement, Hodges witnessed the family dog trounce the family kitten. He got angry and killed the dog.

No one saw it. He stuffed the body up behind ceiling tiles and played dumb later when the distraught family searched for their beloved 12-year-old beagle mix. They wondered how Duchess got out overnight with all doors locked. They found her body days later because of the smell.

Hodges’ girlfriend broke up with him.
