A serious plea to DU about startting Olympic threads
For the next two weeks, can we please not post shit like "Norway wins gold in Ice Skating" in the thread title. Can we learn to use "Olympic Ice Skating Spoiler Alert", please? *Ice Skating used because there is no Ice Skating in the Summer Olympics.

I would hate to avoid DU for the next 2 weeks because people don't think and end up telling people all about the results before they've even seen them. So, can we avoid it? Just this time? Please.

5. That's a good suggestion
It's still going to happen of course; there are a few around here who clearly post without thinking first.

Maybe the mods could come up with a way to Ignore any posts that have the words Olympics Win Gold in them.

Best of luck, hope you get to enjoy them.

9. Nearly all Olympic posts should be banished to the Sports forum anyway.
The Olympics may be some grand, quasi-religious event to some people but to the majority it is just a trivial news event at best and its outcomes should be reported as soon as they happen.

If you have a problem with the time delay in broadcasting the Olympics maybe you should take it up with NBC.

If you would shun DU because of sports then you must not be very interested in progressive politics anyway.

16. Indifference to televised Olympics but
Outrage at Olympic posts on DU outside of the sports section.

There are many message boards devoted to sports. I avoid going to them because I fucking hate sport. I find this works very well for me, and for people who enjoy using those boards.

There are message boards devoted to Olympics. I avoid going to them because I fucking hate the Olympics. I find this works very well for me, and for people who enjoy using those boards.

There's even a fucking sports section on DU. Guess what! I avoid going to it because I fucking hate sports. I find this works very well for me, and for people who enjoy using the sports section.

I come to DU because I am passionately concerned about the fascistic Neocon takeover of the US and the crimes the BFEE has perpetrated upon humanity. It is posts about those matters that I wish to read. I don't want to read about the Olympics.

That said, I vigorously defend freedom of speech and will defend the right of people to post about the Olympics outside of the sports section. And just as vigorously defend my right to post that they are fucktards for doing so.

17. lol OK
I just asked that people who do watch the Olympics and get excited about someone winning be courteous to those of us who haven't had a chance to watch things we like yet.

I wouldn't have any problem with it all going to the Sports forum. I was with you right up until you decided to resort to a personal attack. I wasn't even nasty. I asked nicely. Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning or are you always this cranky?

I don't actually come to DU to see Olympic threads. There are sports forums for that. But, I do like to watch the games and it sucks when you go to the latest page and, with no choice at all, you see the results for something you were planning on watching later.

38. Excellent point.
While I enjoy watching the games, I understand that there are those here at DU who loathe them. Placing them somewhere other than General Discussion seems to be a reasonable compromise worthy of DU and DUers imho.

19. Really?
So, we shouldn't watch sporting events in any country that has a history of human rights abuses?

Guess the Super Bowl is going to be awful quiet in 2009.

33. The US also commits human rights abuses
Edited on Sat Aug-09-08 09:02 PM by kdmorris
And the government is oppressive in a lot of ways. The reason that I like the Olympics has nothing to do with the country that it's in. It's one of the few times that every one in the world gets a chance to compete together, much like the World Cup. The Superbowl has EVERYTHING to do with it if you won't watch a sporting event in a country that is oppressive and commits human rights abuses, because that takes place in the US.

What's with the nastiness? You have an opinion and you are fully entitled to not watch it if you want, but acting like everyone that does enjoy watching a world wide sporting event is a "head in the sand", "shop at Wal-Mart" kind of person is really bigoted and I really don't deserve that.

39. I hate and loathe the Chines government, but they aren't Commies any more
No matter how many times they say they are. They are a totalitarian fascist government now.

I LOVE the Olympics, and having it in that country is like the '38 Nazi games, complete with goose stepping soldiers at the Opening Ceremonies.

34. personally, i don't see why the olympics are a topic here --
i'm with chomsky: most sports are another opiate of the masses.

why did we not cancel the olympics in china when they reneged on their promises? I missed that rationale.

37. Some people drink. Some people do other things
and some people watch sports for entertainment. And the Olympics is one chance for everyone in the world to compete, kind of like the World Cup for all sports. It's one of the few things I do watch for entertainment. And the host country has nothing to do with it, for me. Others have their own opinions and I respect that.

I don't see why it should be a topic of discussion here either, but I would never ask that people not discuss something that interests them, especially since the Admins have come out and said that they are fine with it. So, given that the admins have approved it posting it and people get excited and want to talk about something that makes them happy, all I asked is that people not post results in the thread title, in much the same way EarlG did.

P.S. "WE" can't cancel the Olympics. All "we" can do is boycott the Olympics, which hurts the athletes, not the host country.
